Red dot for rimfire rifle

I bought my kid a Marlin 60 for Christmas and would like to scope it for him. I have a cheaper older Glenfield 4x15 scope that I could put on, but I think a red dot would be better for him to learn with. It will mainly be used for plinking and maybe a little target shooting at 25 to 50 yards. What are your thoughts on a red dot vs a 3/4 tube scope for a 7 year old. He has been practicing with his bb gun for the last year, but still has problems with the open sights. If a red dot would be your choice what is a decent scope for around $50.00 or less?

I put a Tasco 1x30 Red Dot Sight on a 10/22 - 5 MOA dot. It comes with rimfire mounts and meets your pricing criteria. Seems fine. Mfr# BKRD3022

I would start a kid with irons before going to any type of optic. Get the fundamentals thought first.
