Hi, a friend of me is thinking about buying a stungun/baton from paradef. He is focussing on the standard or the magnum version. what do you think about this stuff?

It would be best if you provided a link to what you're talking about.

From what I found on a quick google search, they are nothing more than fancy "stun guns" (touch-based electroshock weapons) which are all but useless for self-defense. This type of weapon does not render the target unconscious like is often advertised, but rather simply inflicts pain. Useful for handling non-compliant prisoners and acts of torture, not so much for stopping an attacker.

I agree with glistam. Frankly the best thing to happen to the handheld stungun market is the widespread use of the (brand-name) Taser. Two totally different things, often confused in people's minds as being equally effective.

those things aren't great in my opinion. I honestly don't even know that I can say that they would be all that swell at handling non-compliant prisoners. Simply put, they don't inflict enough pain to be of any use. Case in point, my meathead buddies and I once spent an entire weekend randomly shocking each other with them and aside from the endless comedic aspect, I can tell you truthfully that we spent not one second immobilized or in anything resembling pain strong enough to be considered a deterrent. Aside from that, they are near useless if you are trying to shock someone through anything much thicker than a cotton t-shirt.
Now, I don't keep up on stun guns, so I will say that I am open to the possibility that maybe someone makes one that is totally awesome. I doubt it, but if someone does, I will happily stand corrected.
As mentioned, real Tasers are pretty gnarly. I am sure we have all seen the videos or witnessed in real life someone getting zapped with a Taser. It looks extremely unpleasant, and by all appearances is a pretty good deterrent.

Hilarious!
Cousin Earl did that to me once. Just before he went to his Mensa meeting.(not)
Somehow he ended up with a atomic wedgie.
To make amends I gave him a Spyderco Tenacious.

If he makes you mad again you can tell him the Tenacious is made in China
