Hey y'all,
Found a Hakim in great shape and am looking forward to going 8mm milsurp crazy with it and my VZ-24, but was hoping to get the skinny on it before its first trip to the range.

Is there anything unique about the Hakim every owner should know? Quirks, no-no's, especially pleasing aspects, etc.? Thanks in advance!

Yes

DO NOT SHOOT known "Hot" ammo! Turk Yugo ect. Suspect any new load to be a BOMB and start with the gas valve CLOSED and work it open only till the rifle cycles

Keep your booger pickers out of the action TRUST ME Garand or SKS thumb is a hangnail by comparison to what these rifles can do

Keep the chamber fairly clean and the action well lubed to prevent Out of battery or slam fires. Use Hard primers if you reload.

and in general just be prepared to learn all the idiosyncrasies that come with the AG42/Hakim as these are really guns for the gun nerd and not really the beginner

More here Dutchman probably knows more about these than anyone else alive

How does one load this rifle without the action slamming shut??

It top-loads with strippers into a semi-permanent magazine, so how does one do this without triggering the action to release and slam shut? With a Garand it's easy enough to hold the op rod handle back while pushing in the en bloc clip, how does one use stripper clips while keeping the action open?

they work like an sks in this respect, the bolt stays open till you pull the action cover-bolt handle back to release it

What about ammo? I have a bunch of Romanian surplus 7.92x57 150-grain, is this OK with the Hakim?

Yes Romanian surplus is excellent in these rifles, as is Yugo surplus.

These are great guns, well built, and fun to shoot. Downside is they are long and clumsy, slow to reload even with stripper clips. More a range toy when put in comparison with modern arms.

A word of note: be careful about how you treat it. Spare parts are difficult and in some respects impossible to find.

I had two, sold one. The one I kept is a great shooter, but I never shoot it. I have tired of the corrosive ammo cleanup and boy, break that front stock band taking the gun apart and you're sunk, you will never find another.

Romy works well. Also, the bolt won't slam shut if the safety is on. Like krochus said, be careful with the gas adjustment. The action is very violent if the gas is adjusted too high, and it will fling brass into outer space is it's adjusted that way.

There are two parts prone to breakage on these that you should check before buying. The extractor can break if you try to force a jammed round out, and I've heard of the rear sight adjustment breaking as well.
The extractors can be replaced for about $40, I don't know about the sight parts.

these guns are regulated for heavy ball. 50's yugo, ecuadoran, and other 198 gr loads cycle well and are capable of 1-2MOA. the 70's romanian is not regarded as very accurate, giving 3 MOA in most guns.

the hakim is a breeze to clean, as the entire bolt and dust cover assembly comes off in one piece.
