This thread was moved to the hunting forum.

But it's about a lot more than hunting, if you read the second half of the article. It's about how people are not shooting as much anymore in general. I think it should be in general discussion where more people will see it.

Well, I didn't move it so I can't answer your question. However, I have alerted someone who can. Hopefully they'll be along in a bit with an answer for you.

Mark,
I'm the one who moved that one, so I guess I'm the one to field your question.
Actually, this kind of gives me a chance to address a related point: why do moderators move threads at all? Short answer is that we don't move threads in order to put them where they won't be seen. We move them so that they will be seen, by the people most apt to be interested in them.
In this case, I moved the article to the Hunting Forum because its focus was primarily upon the outdoors/hunting aspect of the shooting sports. The article does talk about more than "just hunting," but gun rights and the future of the shooting sports are seen through the eyes of a hunter/outdoorsman.
In the end, it boils down to a judgement call. While you may think that more individual posters will see the article if it is in General, the fact is, there are still too few hunters who are interested in the bigger picture of how hunting relates to the future of firearms -- and a lot of them never look in General at all. By moving the article to Hunting, I made sure that the individuals who are most interested in hunting and least interested in the bigger picture would have a chance to see it.

Sometimes I also get questioned as to why a thread was moved to a different forum so I would like to state my method of determining where a thread should end up if it needs to be moved at all.
I read the entire first post to see what the single major topic of the post is. There are often more than one topic in the post, but there is always one overriding topic that stands out. If the forum where the thread was originally started isn't the correct one for that one topic, I move the thread to the forum that is. This makes it a fairly simple process.
In the thread in question, the main topic is hunting, therefore it got moved to hunting. IOW, I would have done the same move as pax so I have to conclude that she and I have similar "move" philosophies.
Now, if the thread starter states in the thread that he or she would like to have it remain in the forum for a logical reason, I will almost always leave it as is. There is no hard and fast rule that a thread must be moved so I see no reason not to honor their request. A PM or email after the move giving a good reason to move it back is most often honored as well.
