I have an Original Defender of Freedom 2nd Ammendment NRA Commemorative Model 442-2 S&W 38 Special +P. It is engraved and has the number 150 etched into the cylinder pivot bar. Does anyone know how many of these were made? S&W wants $50.00 for a history statement.

Not a clue how many were made, but it must have been a lot as they come up for sale all the time and command no premium over a stock 442.

Also not sure if they were done by S&W for the 2nd. Amendment Foundation.
Or if they were done by the 2nd. Amendment Foundation.

You might be able to find out how many there were from them.

+1 with rc. I just looked in the 3rd edition of the SCSW and the "Original Deffender" is not even mentioned. So I would hazard that ther is little if any collector value / demand. The history letters up until a year ago were $30. Many of us cried when the cost went to $50 but even at that price it is a real bargain. Try getting a letter on a Colt. Whew...

FYI On a Smith that "pivot bar" is called a "yoke" most other revolver manf. call it the "crane." That #150 maybe an assembly number or some other temporary, internal factory designation.

Looks like the -2 engineering came along in 2001 and brought about the internal lock and MIM parts. In 2002 the adress line went from 4 lines to 2 lines; then in 2004 the stocks went to Ahrens wood grips. Unless there has been an Eng. change designation in the last 3 years they're still at -2. 3rd edition lists ANIB at $365, EXC at 325 an VG at $280. Probably multiply that by 1.4 and you'll be close, give or take.
