Shotshell Sling Options?

Hi all,

I'm not a mall ninja, but I'm new to shotguns.

I bought my sister and new BIL a 8-shot Mossberg 500 as a wedding present. Now I'm thinking accessories, and a shotshell sling makes a lot of sense to me.

I understand the problems with these (they're heavy, and they pendulum if they're not taut), but the extra weight will be welcome (the damned thing kicks like a mule when shooting buckshot), and if they sling up for a long shot, then it won't pendulum.

It also seems like a decent way to carry extra ammo — she's a lefty and he's a righty, so a buttstock carrier or a side saddle won't really work.

First Question: Which one?

I like the Ace and Bagmaster (Google "ace shotshell sling" and "bagmaster shotshell sling"). Of the two, the Bagmaster looks better on the errornet, but I've got an Ace pistol case and it's fine, too.

I like the design of the King and G&P, too, but they're airsoft...

I don't want a Blackhawk or Eagle, because they attach with clips, and they'll twist.

Second question: How to attach a sling to an 8-shot Mossberg? It's got a sling swivel stud in the mag cap, but that's absurd. I'm thinking of falling back on a Choate clamp (I've used these on my father's Remington 1100, and they're fine).

Please advise,

Bimmer

I have a simple basic rifle sling on my 870P. Something like $15.00 at Cabela's.

It attaches to the swivel cap and the buttstock and gives me absolutely no grief, works great. I would have no desire to carry extra shells on my sling. Pack 12 extra round inside a nylon pouch on my hip when in the outback.

I have an Allen shotshell belt that holds 25 shells. It works for me.

I didn't want to sling my shotgun because I use it for HD.

An ammo sling can cause some issues when being brought to bear-besides your pendulum, it can snag. I have a side saddle and I am LH, it does not get in the way.

If this is for HD/SD, IMO the simpler the better. If 8 or 9 shots doesn't end the issue, then they have greater issues to deal with it. Get them some lessons on HD/SD use and tactics and some ammunition for practice

A couple things....

Rather then adding weight to an 8 shot Mossberg, better to learn to run the gun.

Curb weight on a fully loaded 500 with the long mag, maybe 6.75 lbs. That's not an ultra light.

Get the fit right for the smaller shooter, practice with light birdshot loads until a reasonable level of profiency is developed.

And, R/R 00 is just as effective in real world scenarios as the 12 and 15 pellet maggie numbs.

As for that sling, inside the house it's just another thing to catch on stuff at a horribly wrong time. With or without shells. Kept taut, it interferes with the shuck. Don't ask how I know...

A sling should be nearby if the problem calls for neighborhood defense and we need to militia things up, but that's why we have QD studs.

As for extra ammo, any situation not resolved with 8 rounds of 00 PROBABLY will not be solved with 20.

Real world HD scenarios do not require as much ammo as the Battle For Hue.

If you really want to do something for Sis and her SO, consider lessons.

HTH....

I like the sidesaddle. And as another poster stated it does not get in the way of left handed shooting.I am right handed but I split my shooting time right and left.

I don't use the sidesaddle for spare shells per se. It is there for ammo selection. I keep slugs on the gun, and four #1buck in the tube. Loading a slug on the fly isn't too hard (or slow) with practice.

Not a fan of the bandolier sling by any stretch. Too many cooks can ruin the soup just like too many accessories can get in the way of second nature when operating a weapon in defense of your life.

If it's for range fun, fine. Allen makes decent products, really as good as any. I believe Blackhawk! makes one of these, but you're paying for the tactikewl name. Get what's cheapest, and learn it's limitations well!
