The Ruger website lists their 28 gauge O/U as having a 3 inch chamber. Has anyone ever heard of a 3 inch 28 gauge shell?

I haven't, nor have I ever seen a 3" 28 gauge chambering on any other shotgun

I betcha it's a mistake on the web site.

There never has been a 3" 28 ga shell made as far as I know.

I seem to remember in the dim distant past an English maker doing one, but I have never heard of, or seen 3 inch 28 bore ammo.
Like many things, some just don't stand the test of time.
I shoot a 28 bore a lot these days, and for game 21 gram loads are just about perfect, negligible recoil and superb patterns = good clean kills.
Both of these disappear when you step up to a 28 gram load.
16 grams for clays is also a very nice load, not so good on birds or rabbits except at very close range.

With new hulls and a roll crimp I'm sure you could get close to a 3" loaded round.

I believe the 3" 28 ga was going to be marketed by one of the European ammo makers, a few shotgun makers agreed to cut 3" chambers to support the round, but there was no sales interest and the idea died. There are indeed a few 3" 28 ga guns out there, but no shells for them!

Interesting.

While the standard ammo for the 28 gauge (Little Big Gun) is listed as 2 3/4", some Remington empties I had on hand were more like 2 7/8".
