Not really on topic, I know. But if the mod's could keep this thread
open until I get some data, I'd appreciate it.

In a recent thread, someone posted the following link about a multiband
radio:

http://www.alpharubicon.com/prods/radioworthbuying.htm

My curiosity is now piqued. I want one. However, two things are blocking
me.

First, Radioshack has discontinued this item. None of what they had
left over was of interest to me. I like the size/cost/shape/crank of this
unit. I will need to find a replacement.

Second, I don't know BS about radios. I know AM/FM, I had a CB once, and
I own a handheld VHF for my boat. I don't know the difference between
short-wave, HAM, VHF....etc. What should I be looking for?

Can the collective knowledge pool of this list point me in the right
direction on communications as it has on firearms? Any lists, websites,
FAQ's? I'm not looking to get into radios whole-hog (like I need another
hobby!). Any pointers would be most appreciated.

PS. to any veterans out there...thanks!

Register and go to the Survival Communications forum.

Careful though, while there are a lot of nice folks over there....some are wrapped a little tight and wear tin foil hats. :D

Grundig, if I remember right, makes a similar model.

I'm going to move this to accessories where it may get more replies.

That might be what you are looking for. Crank-powered and a small light. Good brand and inexpensive.

Thanks all! I will probably get the Grundig.

Do any of you have this radio?

http://www.icomamerica.com/receivers/handheld/icr5main.html

It's an icom r5.

Not the same as my origional request, but I also want to get a police/fire/weather/SW scanner.
It seems like an incredible amount of functionality in a small package. Any experiences?

Thanks again!

I don't have that particular Icom, but I have a similar unit that Yaesu makes, the VX-7R (http://www.yaesu.com/indexVS.cfm?cmd=DisplayProducts&ProdCatID=111&encProdID=GcixovTmTQk%3D&DivisionID=65&isArchived=0). I'm very happy with it as it does more than I probably need it too and it seems like I'm always learning something new about it.

If you're looking to learn more about communications in general, try these links:

You can't go wrong with a Grundig. Icom makes great products. I don't own any, but the consensus opinion on radio forums is Icom is one of the best radio makers. I do have a freeplay (that's the product name) radio that is crank- and solar-powered. I can recommend this brand. A couple sites to check out:

www.strongsignals.net a VERY informative site run by Rich Wells, who is extremely knowledgeable on all aspects of radio communications

www.arrl.org a site dedicated to the ham radio operator. Have fun. :)
