TURNING THE INTERNET OVER TO THE UNITED NATIONS?

Wow! This one popped up out of nowhere. I had no idea that there was a movement to turn the management of the Internet over to the UN. It seems that "developing countries" like Brazil, India, South Africa, China, Saudi Arabia and others want the Internet to be managed by national governments with international control ... United Nations control.

There is going to be a world information summit in Geneva next month. These countries were going to try to make the Internet management change at that time, but those plans have been shelved ... temporarily. As some say, however, it's now on the agenda.

Here's how this is going to come down. The countries that want the Internet managed by the UN are going to plead unfairness in the assignment of Internet names. That will be the cover under which UN control is sought. Once these national governments and the UN get their clutches on this wonderful information system can censorship be far behind?

Boortz is simply presenting a news item that you can find for yourself.

America out of the UN; the UN out of America!

That would fix it (remove their $$ fix).

It's time and long past time to deport the United Nations to Zimbabwe.

Actually the Internet is subject to a fair bit of control.

The UN could, for instance, impose a tax on commerce conducted over the internet... and if it isn't connected, go after the ISP that serves the offender, and if the ISP refuses, shut down the routing of their packets.

The internet does have some single points of failure, or that is to say, it is not a million networks, its a thousand inter-connected networks where a dozen or so points carry almost all the traffic. These points are the locations where packets from one network are routed to the next.

Some form of the internet could be created if the UN took over control of those locations, but the thing that really is bad is that the governments over the territories where these routers live have the power to shut the companies that run them down.

As long as the internet is dependant on wired connectivity, it will be subject to government control.

IF people start using wireless technology more and more-- and for longer links, then it becomes more difficult to control.

But the government can shut down large portions of the net.... they have less control if they leave it wide open but want to exercise some control anyway... for instance, the FCC wants to regulate VOIP (Voice over IP- internet phone calls). Eventually they are going to want to be able to tap any VOIP connection at any time.

But that's going to cause people to start encrypting these connections... (only terrorists have a need to talk privately, don't ya know) and then the government will start looking for traffic patterns that indicate VOIP, and so people will start hiding their VIOP traffic inside the HTTP protocol or something....

I think there's going to be a battle waged over control over the internet... the free market is too free for governments to allow.

Imagine, people using english. On computers... IN FRANCE! The Horror! :what:
