Black powder question

Gents, does the breech plug screw in or is it pressed/soldered on old black powder doubles? I've stripped/disassembled the gun completely except for the breech plugs. The barrels were falling apart (failed solder joints), so they were not too difficult to separate.

Most very likely screwed in.
Pressed or soldered would sooner or later blow out and shoot your eye out.

I've only seen screwed-in, but they can be a bear to remove.

In my experience, "bear to remove" often translates as "impossible without ruining the gun".
Hi, BBBBill, I can only hope that you are not planning on firing that relic.

Jim, thanks for the concern. Nope, it will be strictly a wallhanger. Not even mine, but it will be labeled as "Not Safe to Fire". The breach will be plugged with an epoxy mix about an inch deep and the nipples will be plugged, too. It is an oldy for sure. Someone tried to hot blue it years ago which had the expect effect on the solder. :banghead: They tried to repair it, but ..... :(
The barrels are severely pitted under the wood anyway.
The question about the breach plugs was because I wanted to do a thorough job of cleaning it before re-browning and to get the plug and barrel realigned where the "features" (I don't know what they are called) are on the sides above the wood line.
