SOG has these for $700 or so in VG shape chambered for .308 w/ 20 round mag, which were Argentine Navy reworked rifles done in the '60s.

AWESOME rifle. AKA "SAFN" Imagine a combination of the best hand-crafted European rifle with the features of a battle rifle. Accurate, reliable, and extremely well made. Their high price insured they would only be used by a few nations. When cheaper battle rifles came out in the '50's they went bye-bye. A few South American nations and Eygpt bought some. They are mostly Eygptian in 8x57JS, but you can find some in .30'06 and others in 7x57.

I had one, and I let it go (kicks self hard).

Sidenote--the UK had the plans for these AND the engineers from Belgium during WWII. They could have made SAFN's for their elite troops, but decided it was too radical a notion. The SAFN's would have exclipsed the Garands as the best semi autos of the war, no question. I remember (tears in my eyes) how my SAFN put a Garand on the range next to me to utter shame, though I paid (more tears) only $350 for mine.

I've got to go lie down and cry now :(

If you've got $800-900, Empire Arms and BDL both have them in 7mm. Nice ones, too.

I found one in .308 for $475. Gonna go look at it. We'll see! Thanks again Tim

"Argentina purchased some 5,541 SAFN's in caliber 7.65x54mm for the Argentine Navy ("Armada de la Republica de Argentina-" ARA). In 1962, under an upgrade program devised and supervised by FN, the ARA upgraded their SAFN's in the following manner: A new barrel in 7.62mm NATO was fitted, a new triggerguard with provision for retaining a 20 round detachable box magazine was installed, and the converted rifles were provided with a supply of 20 round detachable box magazines."

I would consider buying it, STRONGLY for that price assuming it's not a rust bucket. You're talking an excellent item there of which only a few thousand exist. If it's got the 20 round mag, buy it for sure. To bad it isn't stil in 7.65 Arg., but it sounds like they were all converted.

FWIW, I have owned and fired FN 49's in .30-'06, 7.9mm, and 7mm. They are not bad rifles, but, IMHO, not as good as the U.S. M1 rifle. The rifle is obviously a predecessor to the FAL, and the two rifles share many design features.

An FN-49 has long been on my list of 'must-haves'. I've heard nothing but good things about them for years.

I've got an FN49 and with the cheap 8mm ammo available its a joy to shoot. I just wish the scope mount from S&K would drop in price $50 so I can buy one and mount it on the built-in rails.

This is the description that the guy gave for the rifle:

The FN 49 is in very good condition it is an Argentina Naval 308 with 10 round magazine.

Any other thoughts on this rifle? Thnaks for all the input Tim

How much do they want? It better be a good bit less than $700 with only a 10 round mag. (I see they want $475)

They were imported by a company called Aztec something or other in '96 and were selling for around $350 then.

The have the flashhider removed and a piece welded on where it used to go, over the threads.

They only have ~700 for sale.

Well the Eygptian contract SAFN's are a lot more common than the Argies, and in good condition they're going for over $600 now, so it sounds like a great deal.

Personally, I would rank the SAFN higher than the Garands. They can be loaded by stripper clip or by hand. I believe the Argies can also be loaded by magazine. They hold 10, not 8. They're more compact. Their design is more straight-forward.
