Tell me about this gun. I held one today and fell in love with it.

It all started when I went to look at the Llama I-max and asked what other guns they had in the 1911 syle.

The guy handed me this one and it made the Llama feel like crap.

But is it worth the extra 150 bucks?

For those of you who don't have Springfield 1911 model numbers memorized: Springfield Mil-Spec (http://www.springfield-armory.com/prod-pstl-1911-ms.shtml)

I think you would be well served by a Springfield, especially the Mil-Spec. Everything I've heard about the Mil-Spec indicates it's a very reliable pistol straight out of the box. Llamas have a much poorer reputation. If you have the money, I doubt you will regret the extra $150.

I have two Mil Specs that I bought many years ago. Both have seen a lot of abuse in USPSA competition and both are still very tight guns. One has been my tinkering gun while the other is basically stock except for a home-installed beavertail and one of SA's dropo-in factory match barrels. The only time I have had reliability problems with them is when I rushed through the reloading process and didn't get a good crimp on the rounds. To express the quality of these pistols: I called EGW today about making a 9x23 pistol for me. When asking them about the best base firearm, T gave them the option of Kimber, Colt, or Springfield Armory. They said without a doubt....Springfield Armory. You might want to consider the new WWII edition. In my area, hey are going for $400 NIB. They are probably the best deal in a base gun for 45acp.

My two cents.

SPEND THE EXTRA $150!!

I've had my S.A. Mil-Spec for years, great gun. Only issue I had was that I needed it tuned a bit so that I didn't get smacked in the forehead by hot brass.

If you actually end up choosing the Llama over the Springfield I will make it my personal mission to shame you off this forum. :D

Like I said, the Llama felt better than my Hi-point, but the springfield feels better than the Llama. I like the look of the springfield better too.

Target_Shooter,

One of the few things I have learned about firearm and firearm accessory purchase is to get EXACTLY what you want. If you do not do that, you will end up chasing the gun you wanted. You may end up modifying what you bought to compensate for what you perceive as its shortcomings. You may end up buying the one you wanted later and putting that previous purchase in the throne of safe queen. But you will never be as happy with a firearm as getting the one you want. You can be downright bitter going to the range with a compromise purchase knowing the one you actually wanted is around the corner and was only $150 more.

Hands down, the springfield is a better gun. Heck, the mil-spec is not just better, it is an objectively GOOD gun. That $150 will buy you all these things:

1) Reliability
2) Comfort
3) Springfield Repuation
4) Piece of Mind
5) Something with "expansion potential"

Regarding item 5, I don't believe Llamas are fully compatible with all 1911 parts. Someone else can handle this better but the short of it, don't like spurred hammer or grip safety on your Springfield? Get a commander hammer and a beaver tail from any of a billion manufacturers. Don't like them on your Llama? Oh well, you're screwed.

Get the Springfield!!
I'm thinking of getting the Llama just to start learning how to mess with the 1911, so I won't screw up my Springfield!! :D
Sort of like a gunsmithing 101 project!!

There are folks that have the Llamas, and like them, but MY vote goes to the Springfield.

Have a Champion model Springy, 1500 rounds, 2 failures, both with American Ammo brass (reloaded). Failure to extract...looked like extractor didn't get a good "bite" on the brass.

The Llama is crap compared to the Springer

Indeed it is!! That's why I'm not gunna poke around inside my springer without first practicing on a lesser target!!! I want it for something to practice on!! If I screw it up, so what!!
