I did a search, but could not find what i was looking for. If following all laws about length, and having access to a Bridgeport mill, plasma cutter, welders of all types and most any other tool you could think of at work, What would be the problems one could encounter cutting, say a SKS barrel ? I am sure someplace like Brownells would carry ,what a mill bit, for recrowning. Can anyone direct me to a source of info on this?
This is more curiosity that something i plan on doing, the discussion came up while researching SKS bullpups, and most we seen did not have the front sight or bayonet lug,i assumed they were removed, while my son thought they looked shortened.
If done poorly,of course accuracy would be affected,if done right, would it still?how? point of impact,or bad groups?

Cutting a barrel, if done properly, should have no effect at all on accuracy.
Unless it improves it!

Barrel crowning lathe bit:

Most folks with a lathe and the skill to use it would just grind a bit themselves.

Here are other tools to accomplish the same end result a different way.

The only problem I can think of you might run into is, the SKS generally has a chrome lined bore that is harder then woodpecker lips.

Might be hard to get a clean cut without chrome chipping out of the muzzle.
But that's just speculation.

The Yugoslavian SKS does not have a chrome lined bore.
But it has a complex gas shut-off / grenage launcher / granade launcher sight / folding bayonet, and that may be what is confusing you on appearances on some of the bullpups you saw.

Russian, Chinese, and other SKS's do not have all the junk hanging off the end like the Yugo SKS.

i have thought about cutting my gb mini 14 down and rethreading it for the flash hidder, but i would rather pay a gunsmith and have it done right

after a mishap, i had the barrel of my 300 win mag cut to try and save it. didnt work out so well. my previously < 1 moa gun turned into a > 4 moa gun. i do not know what the reason is. did the gunsmith do a bad job? maybe not cut enough off (6")? i dont know, and i am not going to invest any more time or money into it. i just bought a new take off barrel, and i am going to have it out on. so basicly, if it shoots good, my advice is to leave it alone!

Don't cut it below 16" or the FBI/BATF "sniper" guys may kill your friend, 12 year old son and wife with a baby in her arms too, ref. Ruby Ridge. [And just where is Lon Harroche (sp?) today, nicely retired on the tax payer's dole?]

For any of you guys that might be thinking of haveing a gunsmith shorten and/or threading your barrel, I personaly would suggest you ask if he is lathe threading or die threading. If he says he has the tools to die thread, find another gunsmith that has the right tools....a lathe! Crushed bores and off center atachments are unfortunate results of die threaded muzzels by "somewhat" qualifyed gunsmiths.
