Hello, the gun in question is a 1859 Sharps carbine that was converted in 1863 to 50-70. The cartouche on the gun is JFC and the serial number is 62572. I am seeking to find out when and to who the gun was issued if possible. While I know that the request is a longshot at best, I would appreciate any additional information on this gun. Does anyone know of a resource that could help in a more thorough research of this gun? Thank you in advance for any and all replies, da V.

Flayderman says the Army did not decide to convert percussion Sharps to cartridge until 1867 and the guns so altered are known as models of 1867 and 1868.
I don't think there is a very good chance of tracing the issue of an individual military small arm. The Springfield Research Service now charges dues, one benefit being that they will look up numbers in their database. But they don't have everything.

Google "McNelly Cavalry Carbine" for some interesting information.
