Trade 3 rifles for 1!

My wife and I met up with some of our friends to do a little plinking at the gun range as we were getting ready to pack up another shooter wanted to know if I wanted to trade all of my rifles(Noveske AR, Russian SKS, and a M1 Garand) for his HK G3 rifle and a 2,000 rounds of ammo. He told us the reason he wants to trade is of the recoil and wanted something with less recoil. Is bartering coming back? This is the second time someone wants to trade guns.

I'm not sure of the value on the G3 but depending on what Garand you have there may not be enough difference with your other guns to make it worth it. I don't think the Novesk is very cheap either.

If someone is offering to trade without you trying then first thing you should do is find out the true value of each of your guns and each of theirs.

Bartering went out of style? My shooting buds and I have always thrown trade offers back and forth...it never hurts to ask, they can only say no...

Personally, I wouldn't take that deal, but whatever.

i wouldn't have done it either.

It actually seems like a pretty fair trade, but I wouldn't do it, unless it is still FA (a real G3 and not an HK-91), because a PTR-91 can be had for in the $1k range and is just as good (made on HK equipment IIRC).

No, I wouldn't have. I keep my SKS to have a rifle to beat up, my AR for training for my army rifle qual, and I would like a Garand just for the history. A 91 wouldn't replace any of those needs.

It sounds like he was trying to rob you. Noveske AR is $1000 plus. Garand is $700 plus. SKS is $200 plus. G3s are not worth any where near $1900+.

G3s are not worth any where near $1900+It is if it is a genuine HK G3 (or rather a semi only HK-91)...and quite a bit more if it is in FA configuration.

2000 rounds of 308 has some value

Since it was a G3, I'd bet that it was a Century build and really not worth that much. I'd stay away from that trade.

I think bartering is really starting to come back. I know my uncle was trying to sell a 4 wheeler and got all kinds of offers for trades from everything from a yellow firetruck to a gun with several other things in between. He finally sold it as he didn't want to trade but it seemed like a ton of people wanted to trade him something for it.

Yellow firetruck? Aren't they always red?

I would have traded if it was red. :D

Bartering is still around. That is how I got my HK93.

If I was the OP when offered this deal I would have laughed right in the guys face. He obviously was trying to get one over on the OP and I likely doubt the G3 was Full Auto capable.

I also seriously doubt the G3 was FA, since owners of NFA weapons are usually pretty knowledgeable and the G3 rifle and ammunition are going to be worth a lot more than the trade value of the OP's three guns...

Though the ammo makes it more interesting I wouldn't have traded either. Your rifles are more useful in many scenarios and odds are you have a goodly amount of ammo for them. HK is overrated anyway, why invest so much in that brand when there are so many fine alternatives for less.

He told us the reason he wants to trade is of the recoil and wanted something with less recoil.

If a G-3 in 7.62x51mm, whether a clone or not, has too much recoil for him, then how would he be able to handle a M1 Garand or SKS? Neither of those are soft shooting...the SKS isn't bad, but neither is the G-3. This smells like a scam to me...although 2000 rounds of 7.62x51 is nothing to sneeze at.

As for bartering going out of style; I don't think it ever really did, and personally, if they have something they don't want but you need, and you have something you don't want but they need, where's the harm? Bartering is still very much around, just look at that guy who started with a paperclip and ended up with a mansion. As the economy gets worse (and it will, before it gets better) bartering and trading will become more and more common.

With the possible exception of the SKS, I wouldn't have traded any ONE of your rifles for a G3. Before you doubt the would-be trader's line about the G3's recoil, have you ever shot one of them? I have, and the G3's operating system to me produces some of the worst recoil I've ever experienced in a rifle, especially a semiauto.

have you ever shot one of them?

Yes, multiple times.

Agreed. For a heavy semi-auto, they're pretty abusive to the shooter. Much more felt recoil than the M1.

That said, I have a Century gun topped with B-square mount and 4.5-14x weaver that shoots very well-especially for a $400 rifle. With handloads and quality factory ammo, it is sub-MOA. I have no intention of getting rid of it.

A normal Noveske is pushing $1500-2k+ (complete rifle), but you know this. Tell him to look for a sucker somewhere else.
