Hello all, I've got a Springfield M1 Garand. Been trying to research it a bit, found that all of the parts are of the specfic date of manufac. The only snag that I've hit so far is the carthouche on the stock. It has the SA and on the bottom of that is a Caps letter B bottom and just to the left of the S. Not sure if the previous owner(s) deceided to remark or if it was done when it was in service. Can anyone help?

Thanks,
Charles

I'm no expert, but I haven't heard of such a cartouche.

http://www.trfindley.com/pgsnstmpsm1.html - According to this, there is no cartouche like that.

You could ask the guys at the CMP forums - some of those guys really are experts.

Good luck, and welcome to THR.

I cant really see much from the picture but no such thing as SA over BS
There are S.A. over S.P.G., S.A. over G.H.S., S.A. over E.McF. , S.A. over G.A.W. , S.A. over N.F.R. , S.A. over J.L.G , S.A. over S.H.M. all of the above are in a box

that's what I've been finding, was wondering if a previous owner(s) tried to remark the cartouche and not knowing the right marks or if it was done by another country that the rifle might have been on loan to. Wanting to refinish the stock, will keep all the marks if they are of value.

It could be a rebuild stamp. I think quite a few were marked in that manner during arsenal rebuilds. Is the stamp on the left butt of the rifle? That's where most of these would be found.

All of this coming from a VERY sketchy memory, mind you. :D

Try the CMP forums or Jouster.com. Lots of very knowledgeable folks that would be more than willing to help you out.

Best of luck in your search...

Does it look like the SA has a box around it? I just cant see much from the pic. It should be located on the left side under the rear sight

The SA is in the top portion of the box, the whole box is incomplete. And it is on the left side of the stock.
