How respectable is my gun colllection?

Ok, it may not be big enough to be called a collection yet. But It's definitely on it's way there especially considering I've only been old enough to buy handguns for a year.

I just want to show off my guns and see how respectable the arsenal is with my fellow gun nuts at THR.

http://img52.imageshack.us/img52/7727/arsenalh.jpg
List of them:
Mossberg Model 88 Maverick - 12ga shotgun
DPMS Panther Arms AR-15 - .223 Rem/5.56mm
Ruger GP-100 - .357 Magnum
Springfield XD - 40 s&w

EDIT:

Thanks for suggestions. Right now I'm torn between deciding on a 22 kit for the AR, a pistol grip and forend for the shotgun, or a laser and light for the XD.

Looks like you have your bases covered. Those ought to cover about 95% of all shooting purposes. I'd probably add a .22LR for plinking.

Great start and nice quality items. In the future how about adding a .22 rifle for plinking, a .22 pistol for inexpensive practice, and at some point a .30 caliber deer rifle, perhaps with a good scope.

So many guns...so little time...

A lot better than mine was at your age! I'd agree with the others on adding some .22s and a H&R single shot 45-70.

I had that many guns at your age, but mine were not of as good a quality. You have nice firearms. Just know now, that you'll never be satisfied. When you buy another, you'll be thinking of the next one before you get it home. It's a beautiful, never ending cycle.

Let me put my thoughts in this manner:

I own about 20 guns (I haven't counted recently). Rifles, shotguns, pistols.

I'm still jealous of your collection.

I don't have a revolver anywhere near that pretty.

Good start, just add a .22 pistol (Ruger or Browning) and a single action revolver, preferably in .44 Magnum or 45 Colt.

I'd consider a .22 kit for the AR as well.

After that...you got everything you need and can start to think about what you want :D

Well you have two guns that own so ill give you a thumbs up .
The Maverick 88 is a great HD gun the GP well there just great ! I almost bought the same AR and that Springfield .40 is a fine auto. As stated you need a .22 lr and a sa of some sort like a Black hawk and maybe a bolt action ,and youre golden,

Excellent start. There's not really much you can't do with that collection. You need a couple of good .22s though. A good rifle and a good pistol. Great for practice, great for small game.
Yes, a big bore revolver like some have suggested would be nice, but that .357 will likely do anything you need a handgun to do. (Unless maybe you're in Alaska, but then that Mossberg is your best bet anyway.)
Beyond the .22s the only place you're really lacking is a heavier rifle cartridge suitable for hunting--if you're so inclined anyway.

It's as respectable as you think it is. To me my gun collection is not about impressing other people, but having the right tool for the job. I'm an avid hunter and in my opinion, my gun collection is complete. I have eight guns, two of which can't legally be used for hunting, but the six others cover everything I need them to.

Granted I don't need anymore guns, that sure doesn't mean I don't want more guns. :D

To answer your question though, damn nice weapons you've got there!

That is a very useful set you have there. I don't think you need much else besides perhaps a .22 rifle of some sort. Very solid start for I am assuming under $2000? If you spend the next $2000 on marksmanship and ammo you will have the proficiency to match the quality of your tools!

A good start. .22 handgun, .22 Rifle and a full power center fire rifle (7mm mag, .308, .30-06, etc.) will cover plinking, small game and big game/long range. Then a small handgun for CCW.

But that is just the beginning. When I first turned 18, I had a Marlin model 81 .22 I inherited, a Remington Viper .22 I bought at 14, a Remington 700 .25-06 and a Marlin 1895 .45-70 that I bought on my 18th B-day. I focused on the collection, and by 19 I had added a Ruger Security-six .357, a Colt Mk IV stainless .45, a S&W Sigma .40, a Remington 870 12 gauge and a Ruger Mini 14. I'm 28 now, and have acuumulated a rather substantial collection.

It just depends on what you want. I'm a shooter, hunter and avid collector, so acquiring firearms to serve those purposes has meant many, many more than the guy who just needs a couple of HD guns, a plinker and a hunting rifle. But if you want to amass a huge inventory, you'll have to focus on that intensly.

I wish you many years of happy gun shopping

Manual long-range rifle is my only suggestion. I would say something like a 30-06 or .308 (or .338 if your shoulders are strong) bolt-action, break-action or lever action. Also I would recommend a .22lr rifle or pistol to make it easy on the wallet to go and blow off rounds.

Respectable start I would say, and you've already got the most expensive stuff with the Handguns and AR-15.

John_galt
December 28, 2009, 08:41 PM
Great start! I would agree w the .22LR in rifle and pistol like nearly everyone else suggested. To round out the handguns you'll need a 9mm, and a.45. If you only get one .45 for you collection, has to be a 1911. This is from a guy who used be averse to 1911s. I've got a few more, but I've had more time. But you have me beat - I am embarrassed to say I've no revolvers. Checkback with us in 5 years - it will take several photos for you to post them all.

Looks like you're off to a good start, but what do you need your guns to do?
Calling it "respectable" because of the number of guns you have is kind of a mistake - my grandfather was perfectly well suited with his collection of only four guns for his entire life.
I'd say if you like your guns and they do what you need them to do, that's all you should worry about.
Don't waste your time asking "my" opinion. ;)

Great start. If I can offer one piece of advice - don't throw your money at a pistol grip for the shotgun. They may look cool, but are next to useless for most applications w/ out some form of shoulder stock. A pistol grip WITH a shoulder stock on the other hand, is not bad. I put one on my first pump when I was 18. Suddenly lost all interest in shooting it. Your shotgun is near perfect just as it is. Instead of buying the shotgun accessories, go pick up a little Ruger 10/22 next payday and have a lot of cheap fun! :D

That's what we call a "good start".

I'm the same age as you (21), and have purchased all but three of my guns on my own. As you will see, I've got a few handguns and a couple of shotguns but my passion is shooting rifles. My favorite caliber is .22LR, and it allows me to keep my ammunition costs down.

I've purchased with my own $$$$. All of these firearms are high quality and have had excellent reliability, so I'd recommend them in a heartbeat.

Rem. 870
LMT AR-15
CZ-75 Compact
FN HiPower
Ruger Security Six
CZ-452 .22LR
Ruger 10/22
Ruger 22/45
Mosin 91/30
S&W Model 34-1 Kitgun

Family heirlooms:
Winchester 69 .22 rifle
Marlin 336
Mossberg Maverick 88

My next purchases will probably be a short barrel revolver and a suppressor or two (one in .22LR and one for .223)
I also advise you to buy the .22 kit for your AR-15 vs. the other items.

Glad to see a young man with his head on straight. Like the other suggestions I would add a 22 pistol and a long distance shooter. Naturally I prefer a 30-06 LOL. My first deer was with a Model 100 Winc. in 308 @ '70. My "truck gun"s now include a 700 Rm, M1A, and an "M" style SKS. The long guns are kept in a metal case but the SKS is free and dusty(it still works when dirty). The reason I suggest adding a long gun is most of the targets one might encounter can not hit you at over 3-400 yds. If you can engage them at 5-600 then you have a tremendous advantage. If you chose your position properly then you can take up your next position as the previous is taken. Let's hope we never have to face that problem on our own soil. wc

you should get a bolt action rifle in .308 like a rem 700 with a synthetic stock and a ruger 10/22 and you should be pretty much covered.

PS: make sure to get a black tacticool stock for the ruger to make a gun grabber cry.

Nice collection, I would have to agree with the rest you need to add 22lr in rifle and pistol for practicing, a lever action deer rifle in 30-30 cal or 35 remington which is good for deer and black bear and a nice bolt action rifle in 30-06 which can be reloaded as low and as high a bullet grain. 308 is also good.

clarence222
December 29, 2009, 08:07 PM
Collection looks good so far, I would also suggest a couple of 22's. Make sure you do plenty of research on the 22 uppers for your AR. I don't own a standard 22 upper myself, but I know some of the 22 uppers haven't got very good reviews. I'm sure some have just haven't read them yet. Colt and Smith both make AR style rifles in 22 for about what you can get the upper for. However the Colt has not got good reviews, and IIRC there is at least one thread here on the Colt.

I myself am a few years older than you and have a somewhat larger collection. That being said buy what interests you and what can you afford. Make sure you do plenty of research on any purchase you might make.

Just my 2 cents worth

December 29, 2009, 08:11 PM
You're off to a good start. The XDs are great pistols - I have a .40 and a .45, and the only problem I've ever had with either was that the earlier model XDs have had some finish problems, and that is apparent with my XD40. I've tried the Glock, I've tried the SigPro series.. it was the XD which convinced me that there was merit in these polymer framed pistols.
Don't let anyone give you crap about having bought a DPMS. They're good rifles. The first AR I bought was a DPMS A-15 16" carbine. Only gripes I had were Loc-Tite on the extension tube and end plate, and the DPMS "snow guard" handguards, although the latter never proved to be any real issue. People can whine to me all day long that it has the chrome moly barrel, no M4 feed ramps, an improperly staked gas key, etc, etc, etc. I've never had a problem with it feeding, haven't had the gas key come loose, and I can hang with the Colt/Noveske/LMT shooters just fine. I still have it and shoot it, even though I just recently did another 16" AR build.
Don't really know what you're looking to add. Personally, I'd say you need a .22... Ruger 10/22 is a good way to go, as is a Henry lever action. And a Mosin Nagant or two (or three, or four.. I swear, those things have a way of multiplying). Without any bubba jobs being done to it, of course.

quite respectable I'll say there Sir.
my .02 you maybe think about a .22LR 'trail' pistol, a pocket rocket around the yard pistol (.32?) and if nothing else but an H&R single shot another 'spare' shotty since you already have ammo just in case a friend or family member is caught at your place when SHTF w/out a firearm. since you have 2 powerful pistols that spare shotty and 1 of the pistols someone would be well-armed.

I like the fact that you are open minded as far as your gun selection goes. It suggests that you will put together an interesting accumulation as time, available money, and interest continues. In my opinion, you definitely should consider a couple 22's, a centerfire rifle (probably 308ish bolt), and perhaps another shotgun depending on your interests (gauge and design appropriate to your interests). I honestly don't shoot shotguns much except for hunting, but some do far more shooting with them. A pocket sized revolver or pistol may also be quite handy.

it's a bit on the small side for a "collection". but you have the basics. just make sure you are proficient with each of them, and you have it made. you ever hear of the one gun man? that doesnt mean he was ill prepared for what came at him. he had to be GOOD with that one gun. i would suspect that in the old days, many, many men were one gun men. probably, mostly shotguns. they just did not have the extra income to buy a lot of guns.

Thats my story too jeb... but... just keep the older, cheaper guns as they are just as fun to shoot as a finer weapon is. Just not as fine. I learned that I need to save for something of higher quality and to stop selling guns unless I just do not like the gun.

You've got the basics for defensive firearms, and you can hunt with them, too, if need be. But an absolute must is to add some .22LR rimfire guns. Don't get too caught up in all the accessories, especially for the shotgun. Make a .22 rifle your next purchase!
