Mossberg Serial Number

I've found that most questions regarding firearms can be answered if you ask the right person. So here is my question:

I have an old Mossberg shotgun that belonged to my father. Since he passed away I am now the proud owner of a Mossberg Model 185D in 20ga. I like to record the serial numbers of my firearms for insurance reasons. I have looked the gun over and, as of right now, I been unable to find a serial number. Can anyone point me in the correct direction? Will I have to take the gun apart? Is it worth it?

Thanks,

If it is old enough, it might not even have a serial number. I'm not familiar enough with the Mossberg line, however, to say what models came out when, or how old it might be.

average_shooter, It's old that is for sure, however I do not think it is any older than the 50's. When I first started hunting this was the shotgun I was allowed to use. It's a bolt-action so my father felt I could not get into too much trouble. It handles like a rifle and I have always liked shooting it, but forget about any follow-up shots.

Mossberg did not put serial number's on their shotgun's prior to gca 1968.

bearman49709, Thanks for the information. I really did not want to take the stock off to look for a serial number.

Smitty in CT, Thanks for the picture. My shotgun has only one of the choke tubes (improved) with it. I know it will never be a collector's item but then again I never plan on selling any of my firearms. If I could find a Funeral Director I could trust, I'd have them placed in the box with me before they throw the dirt in! LOL
