Is it really necessary to get a set of dedicated bore guides for a collection of rifles, or do the universal ones from the likes of Hoppes do a reasonable job?

I've used the Hoppes, and it's worth my money to get dedicated ones.

The universal tapered brass cone ones work well when cleaning from the muzzle.

You can drill out the primer pocket on a fired case to fit the cleaning rod to make them for cleaning from the chamber end.
