The Yugo is an intermediate length action. The K98 is a "full length" action.

"Better" is a pointless question unless we know what it's intended use is.

mailnly durability,

if there is any difference at all

basically which is the better of the 2

whats gonna handle turkish surplus ammo the best (i heard that can be hard on the rifling ) and hold its accuracy enough to hunt deer with using hunting ammo.

also if you had a choice of 2 one being a like new yugo m48 or a used vg-ex k98 which would you pick (not for collectable purposes) ?

For non collecting, and to shoot 7.92x57mm Ammo only,,, the new M48.

For conversion to a sporter in 308, 338 fed, 358 win, 257 Roberts or 7x57mm then the M48 is just fine.

For converting to a full size sporter such as 30-06, 338-06 or 35 Whelen, then you need a full size M98 action.

IMO, the German K98k, all manufacturer codes, prior to late 1944, will be better made, fitted, and generally function better than an M48.

The M48's tend to have a stiffer bolt function on cocking(opening), and very stiff safeties.

Triggers are a wash between the two.

Accuracy wise, I have seen little difference.

M48's still seem to be available locally, and cost less.

K98k's so dated were of WWII origin, and in whole or part, were issued at that time (taking parts guns into consideration).

Some M48's may have been used in the Balkan conflicts, but they are not as sought after by collectors, which affects there price, along with the relative quality issues, and the intermediate safety breeched action, which affects alteration and aftermarket support (not quite as much stuff made that fits that action).

For a shooter, the 'like new' M48 get the vote!

K98k, you've got the history.

Blasphemy alert...:D

It's a lot easier to get a stock for the full-length action, from what I can tell.

So when you decide to saw off all the old military junk and use the action as the basis for a nice custom rifle, it might be easier to stock the K98.

OTOH, an intermediate-length action and a 7x57mm or 6.5x55mm would make a great gun. And I'm sure when you have a Grade V walnut stock shaped, they'll inlet it however you want.

It's a shame to leave such a wonderful action in an obese old military POS with a crap trigger.

That'd probably be my first choice: the M48. Remove all the junk that comes attached to the action, have a barrel fitted and chambered, send it off to Wenig for a stock, and have the whole thing finely polished and blued.

German K98k, I got all of mine when they were $99 to 109.

I've had two M48s (actually a M48 and M48A) and both are/were problematic. Poor quality on both. The M48a would give hard extraction, probably due to rough machining on the bolt lug recesses, the chamber was squeaky clean, and I sold it before coming up with the definite cause.

The M48 I still have. The safety does not work on it- it was at one time very stiff, but after dry firing it once the shoulders on the firing pin were peened back and the safety no longer worked. It looks like poor machining (overall the machining on a Yugo M48 is inferior to German or Czech made rifles)on the inside caming surfaces on the bolt and probably poor heat treating of the firing pin. The stock hardware (especially the front barrel band) is poorly fitted which would never be seen on a K98 with the exception of very late war models.

Overall, there is nothing that impresses me about the m48 series of rifles and I very much prefer K98s or various CZ mausers in 8x57.
