I received a Mossberg Overunder Silver Reserve Field. (Yay Christmas) Do any of you have any experience with this particular gun? Are there any problems or particulars associated with it that i should be aware of? Thanks in advance.

Check the serial number, Mossberg had problems with firing pins breaking on the early models. (pins not heat treated properly)

12GA > TR12046393 and lower
20GA > TR20015092 and lower
28GA > TR28005777 and lower
.410 > T410006194 and lower

If your serial # is higher, then you're all set.

If your serial # is lower, contact Mossberg they'll send you new firing pins for free.

My serial # is above that. I've taken it out to the range once so far and put only 50 rounds through it on trap. I couldn't hit jack... I don't know if this is just a variance from my 20 Benelli Nova or if it's bad chokes. Other than that it seems like a work horse with a hint of class. I'll go try it again Sat. and let you know.

You should pattern the gun to see where it shoots in relation to where you are looking.

+1 Brister's sheet test seems to work.

I've put about 1000 rounds through my 20 gauge so far with no problems. I picked it up to use for bird hunting - lightweight and doesn't cost so much that if I put a nick or two in it I'm going to get upset.

Once you've patterned the gun, and know where the POI/POA is, check your chokes to see what you have in the gun. From the 16 yard line, a more open choke like IC or LM will work just fine
