RedLion January 1, 2010, 09:08 PM Show off some pictures, stories, cool stuff, pictures, advice, or some pictures. I was just kinda bored and thought it'd be cool to see some really cool stuff that people don't seem to post a lot. If you have anything really unique like a home-built or one-off .50 or a cool .50ish caliber like the .416/.408/.50dtc or a really nice range, post pictures and excruciating details surrounding it! Btw, more pictures = bonus points!:)

RedAlert January 2, 2010, 12:24 AM Well Jmorris must realize that if the lugs on the bolt fail, he will find his shoulder in the next time zone...
Looks massive.

jmorris January 4, 2010, 05:55 PM WOW Jmorris.
That is a nice looking home build.

If you dont mind. How much
It’s a Loather Walther match barrel so it shoots very well but it does have a little more recoil than my 26” 22-250 but it’s better than a 45-75 lever, as it is pretty heavy.
With all of the tooling (reamers, go-nogo gauges, cutters, mills and such), raw materials 8620 billets, 4130, 4140, titanium billets, etc and the $350 barrel blank the first one had around $1500 in it but #2 drops the price in half almost and by #4 your back to where you can afford ammo.
Well Jmorris must realize that if the lugs on the bolt fail, he will find his shoulder in the next time zone...
Yeah, I worried about that a little too. Had the guys in the engineering lab do an FEA on the design and they said it could handle more than the un-machined barrel blank. It is also the same as the Grizzly big bear 50 bmg. I do have to admit shooting it like cannon with a string over the trigger for the first 100 rounds or so.
jmorris January 4, 2010, 06:03 PM The build came about only because I wanted one and talked other machinists into building one too to cut the costs down. It’s not useful for many applications but blowing holes into 1” thick steel plate seems to be a strong point.

Jmacalpine January 7, 2010, 11:02 PM Hey 50 Shooter,
THAT. IS. AWESOME.
Thanks for sharing.
sv51macross January 7, 2010, 11:31 PM May I ask, how do the bullets not make it though the steel, yet not deform in shape?
[BTW, sick Bushmaster BMG, looks awesome, you can really see the AR-15 DNA in there.]
50 Shooter January 8, 2010, 12:00 AM Because 50 BMG AP rounds are that hard!:D
The target was just a piece of 5/8" mild steel plate, it was set out to 1000 yards. The jacket of the 50 peels off really easy and yes, the AP's are HARD! If they don't hit something as hard they usually stay in one piece and don't deform.
I know some of the rounds are also reloads, so they aren't loaded as hot as the real stuff. Another issue is most are being shot out of bolt guns with a 30" barrel Vs. an M2's 45" barrel.
Forgot to add this.

jmorris January 8, 2010, 09:18 AM 50 shooter that is a cool photo of the plate
^^^Wow, what distance was that at?
The plate was around 250 yds or so The big welts on either side are from regular AP the center one that looks like a reamed hole is from an API bullet. FWIW those rounds would go through the 1” plate then the 8” Oak tree it was leaned against and into a red clay bank behind that, so deep I couldn’t hit the end of the hole with a cleaning rod.
