Intelligence gathering by WalMart

Just got back from my local Wallyworld where I bought a bulk pack of 22LR. As she scanned the ammo, she asked if it was going to be used for rifle or handgun. When I asked why she wanted the info, she said it was so "THEY" could tell if they were selling handgun ammo. I politely told her it was none of her business since I was over 21 (considerably)
Has any one other than me come across this action by WalMart personel? When I purchased my last 22 ammo they did not ask. Could this be something new?
LOOK EM IN THE EYES AND LIE LIKE HELLL!!!!!!

No biggie. It's just built into the register program so it can then advise the checker to ask you if you are either over 18 or over 21 depending on the answer (just as it does when you purchase beer).

They have to ask for stuff like .22 that is commonly used in rifles and pistols. You have to be 18 to buy rifle ammo and 21 to buy pistol ammo, so they have to ask which use is intended.

Nah, nothing new. If you look young they might ask that for ammo that is generally used in both handguns and longguns. Way back when they used to have to check your driver's license and record your DL number in a bound book for all ammo sales. After years of collecting useless information, they finally dropped the idea.

They do that with all calibers common to handguns. Although if it wasn't for the register they probably wouldn't know. I asked for some 44mag ammo once and the guy looked at me like I was a moron. Then proceeded to tell me that he has never heard of that before. And the policy of my local Wally worlds isn't something primarly used in a shotgun or a rifle you have to have a permit.

Always seems here to depend on who is on the register! Sometimes it is never asked .. others it is ..... and whatever I am getting it for I say ''Handgun'' just for the satisfaction!!
As far as the age deal goes ... if they happen to take stock of my ''old dog'' white beard ... there's sure no contest regarding being ''old enough''!! :p

My stock answer is, "Neither, it's for my Uzi."
Strangely, I've never had security called on me for that one. :D

Same type of thing with Knives, at least in NJ. When the knife I was buying for my 16 year old for Christmas was swiped over the reader at WalMart, a beep type noise was heard and the cashier looked at me and said, "Your over 18, correct?"
I guess they are making sure that evil little boys are not purchasing knives.....................My son loves the knife by the way! :D

They do the ammo log in Maryland. They write down your DL # along with the ammount of ammo and which cailbers.
And it is really fun to tell the it's for a machine gun. The looks you get are priceless.

Gad!..Folks..You should be happy that Wally World is only asking it to comply with 18 yr old versus 21 yr old law....
I started shooting when you literally had to register at the counter Gunstore or where ever. ANY..I mean ANY ammo that could be used in a hand gun..That included 22 whether you owned a hand gun or not...They took you name, address and driver's Linsense Number...And no mail order ammo or components period..
So thank you lucky stars.

Records on ammo sales used to be federal law , part of the '68 CGA I think. Vendors had to keep disposition records for ammo just like they did for guns.

Last time I bought 22 ammo here in Ky, the little gal at the register didn't ask me about it.When I mentioned it to her, she just smiled and asked,"Does it really matter?"
I hope she works there full time. Me thinks me might like to get to know her better.;)

So some stores maintain a bound directory for criminals as to where to steal a gun???
Thats what it is name address, caliber, I hope they lock that book in the vault and only let bonded employees ( read no criminal record) handle it.
The local K-mart, and the sports authority keep a book like this. Its store policy not a local or federal law. I never buy ammo there as a result. No licensed Gun shop in DE or Pa keep an ammo registration book.
I have been buying ammo since 1981, in Pa and DE, I have never allowed my name to be written in such a book.
NYC or the people repub of NJ this may be the law, it is a very bad idea.:fire:

Yes, they are tracking your every movement. You should wear your tinfoil beanie so they cannot read your brainwaves.

Now rock jock, you are perfectly aware that a standard tin foil beanie does not work inside Walmart stores. Everyone knows that the security cameras are capable of penetrating the hat and records your thoughts on video tape.

Well, if they don't just lean on the button (most of the time), and they ask, I tell 'em that I may use it in a friend's buzzgun. Then they ask what a buzzgun is...
