I need your opinion on an issue related to feral hogs in TX.
Do you think feral hogs are safe to consume from the standpoint of trichinosis? The topic came up at work and I can see points for both sides.
I am aware of this being an issue in the past and with pigs that were raised domestically, fed uncooked garbage and then served and consumed as partially cooked meat but I wonder if eating a feral hog would represent an exposure risk?
Given that the meat of these critters would be very well cooked before eating.
Thanks in advance for our PsOV and take care

Feral hogs , wild boar, and bear are possible sources for trichinosis. It's not something to panic about. According to the USDA trichinosis can be destroyed by heating the meat to 137 F or freezing the meat at 5 F for 30 days. When cooking a roast it is suggested to cook to an internal temperature of 170 F. Don't worry just enjoy.

Haven't had a Tricho problem yet. A few doctors we hunt with always told us to freeze the piggies first.( For a few days to drop their temp below the threshold for Tricho and then cook 'em real well) Leave no meat pink when cooking as a safe rule of thumb.
We have been hunting and eating these guys for years, with no ill effects. Now, recipe's anyone?:D
