Marks on brass?

I was given some .44 mag brass mfg. by Federal. There is a ring of "serrations" about where the bottom of the projectile would be on the outside of the case. You can feel them when you run them through the sizer die. Does anyone know what could cause the marks on the case? There was also a .38 spcl. case in the bunch that has the same markings on it. That one too was Federal.

I always thought it was the crimp. Reused many for reloading. They are good to use.

It was a cannelure, to keep the bullet from setting back in the case.

Looks typical of a scratched up case from landing on concrete and rolling around a bit, but perfectly usable. Yep, cannelure, to answer your question.

You will see that on a lot of factory ammo revolver ammo to aid as posted in set back.
And, it was used on M852 7.62 ammo to discern that it was at the time not for combat use.......

Winchester factory loaded .44mags have the same cannelure, but like Federal their new cases do not. Seems to disappear after a few reloadings and doesn't affect a thing.

So the bullet they used had a cannelure lower on the bullet? What I'm used to is the canelure that gets the roll crimp. Now that I think of it, I've loaded some 300 gr. stuff that 2 cannelures...one lower on the bullet.
Was the case crimped that low? If so , how did they accomplish that and does it work better than a roll crimp?
Just curious....
Thanks for everyone's help!

The cannelure on the bullet was used to crimp the case mouth into.
The cannelure on the case is totally different. It imparts a ledge onto the inside of the brass right under the base of the bullet to help stop the bullet from being pushed any deeper into the case. It is still used for some factory loadings.
Unless you buy a cannelure tool, you cannot duplicate it. Not many folks own one, and they all use it for making cannelures on bullets, as far as I know. I suppose there is someone out there doing it, but it is certainly not the norm.

...That's what JimKirk said a few posts ago, but I don't guess it registered. I think I've got it now....Thanks.
