What kind of scope am I thinking of?

I am thinking of getting one of those cylindrical little scopes for a "scout" rifle. I'm thinking ones with a red/green dot and 4x magnification. What brands/models are good for something like that? My budget is pretty decent I'd like something middle of the road or above average. Who knows maybe even top notch. Any help appreciated.

EDIT: I'm guessing they don't make anything around 4x? Everything I see is 1x...

Is something like this good?

4 is too high for the scout scope. Think 2x, no more than 3x. The idea is to keep both eyes open without too much disparity due to unbalanced magnification.
Mine's set up with a Leupold M-8, Burris used to make a scout scope too. I've seen people use pistol scopes as well, just make sure the scope's eye relief matches the rest of your setup.
I'm not sure what the appeal of the dot systems is. I don't want a dot bigger than 1 minute. And a scout scope is very fast. With my Leupold on the Remington, it's usually 7 out of 10 clay pigeons (stationary, not flying) at 25 yards, timed, allowing 2 seconds from command to shot.
Don't get caught up in the "more magnification is always better" hype. First off, it's counter to the whole point of a scout scope. Second, if you're in NJ, chances are slim you're going to be shooting at any kind of distance where you'd "require" high magnification.

Read some more Jeff Cooper, mull it over, and if you think it makes sense, go for it. All the way. I've never been as pleased with a field rifle as I am with my Model 7 Scout in 7mm-08.

Still have some work I want to do to it, but it's great right now.

I go shooting in PA so I have room to work with. But anyway thanks for the suggestion I will look at those.
