Ithaca 37 help

So I was very happy with myself that I "successfully" disassembled, cleaned, and reassembled an Ithaca 37 that I picked up last week. It was made in '47 and looked like it hadn't been cleaned since then. Anyway, while checking that everything works (after reassembly) I found that I have to press the slide release (I think that's what its called) EVERY time I rack the slide rather than just the first time. I took it apart again, reread the directions, and reassembled it, with no change. Anyone have an idea where I messed up or how to fix it?
Thanks!

Do you have to press the slide release after you dry fire it as well?

Yes, any time that the slide is returned all of the way forward.
I can see where the tip of the slide release falls off of the slide and blocks its return rearward. (I hope that was clear.) I wish I had another to look at and figure this out...

I have to ask.
Are you PULLING THE TRIGGER between cycles of the slide?

Thanks for the help.
I figured it out (finally). I had put the arm that sticks out of the hammer back in upside down, so it wasn't disengaging the slide stop.
Better late than never, right?
