Good rifle case for traveling?

Yall saw the title, so what are your suggestions?

The rifle is a CVA optima elite. It breaks down like a T/C. I will probably have 2 barrels, both scoped. Would a breakdown shotgun case have enough room for both the frame and the two barrels? I like the aluminum cases I am seeing, but I would like very specific recommendations if you can. By that I mean brand and model number. Pelicans are expensive, but not out of the question.

Suggestions ? Yup. " Google" your question. Lots of good information
available. :)

Sav .250 - google doesn't get me an interactive first person accounting of the pro's and con's of a case. I have googled, and for the most part, I keep seeing the same case over and over again. Rarely are the reviews helpful.

Pelicans are expensive but in my opinion, the best option. I have been phasing out my metal skinned cases and replacing them with the Pelican cases. The cheap ($60-80) metal skinned cases do not stand up to the traveling abuse I put them through. The airlines seem to see them as a target for their frustrations. And I just stack stuff on them in the back of the truck several times a year. They typically last me about 3 years before I need to replace them. I don’t fly with them that much (1-2 times a year) but trips to the range (typically once a week), extended hunting trips (typically 5-10 per year) and carelessness on my part (hey it is a case, it is meant to take the abuse) tends to wear them down.

Please bear in mind I am talking about the cheapish metal skinned cases not the good solid aluminum $250-350 cases, I have no experience with those. However, I feel quite comfortable putting a $2500 rifle with a $1500 scope in a $250 Pelican case. It you don’t intend to use the case as rigorously as I do, one of the metal skinned cases may suffice.

Hope it helps

Probably be helpful if we knew what sort of travelling you'll do. Airline? Your own vehicle?

Greyhound bus? :)

I have the SKB Single Rifle case and have no reservations of it holding up to anything I'd subject it to (airline included). The model I have is at the bottom of the page in this link.

Another vote here for the SKB line. Don't have a gun case from them, but when I bought a particularly short-limbed bow some years back, the SKB case was the only one I could find that fit the bow nicely.

WHEE-YOU! Pricey! However, I did want the bow protected when hauling it in my car (Bows tend to have even more fragile doo-dads on them than do firearms!) and the SKB was all I could find that fit it well, so I bit the bullet and bought the case.

Haven't regretted it once, since getting over the original sticker shock. Case is built like the proverbial brick pizzeria. And it is NOT "champaign priced" like something from Nieman-Marcus. You get what you pay for.

Therefore, if you need a sturdy case for whatever travel, the SKB gets my vote. If I happen to ever need another sturdy case, for rifle, bow, what-have-you, I'll buy another SKB.

Never been disappointed by my Pelican cases.

Art,
Mostly by car back and forth to the range. I expect to take a flight in the next year or so for hunting in NE. I am mainly looking for a short but wide case that has some ability to stand up to a little punishment, even if it never really sees any.

SCYTHEFWD............ It was just a "suggestion" nothing more. Maybe you should have said, you already tried, google. So much for trying to be helpful.

I'd probably just use a padded cloth zipper bag for now, and keep looking for a good used "super box" during the coming year.

Art,
I already use a plastic case when I am going to the range. What I am looking for is one that will hold the frame and both barrels. A full size double will do it, but I would like something a bit shorter/wider if I can. Both barrels are/will be scoped (have the scopes, looking for mounts and rings for one). I was thinking that I could lay the frame in there, with one barrel facing one way and the other mirroring it to protect the scopes/crowns and at the same time be as compact as possible. I have been looking at cheap beak action shotgun cases, but I feel that they are well..... crap.

SAV - I thought the "I've been seeing" part would have hinted that I was doing other and prior research before asking. No biggie, wasn't trying to bite your head off or any thing.

Frame + both barrels via car? Umm, *two* cloth zippered cases? :-)

Pelicans for airline travel for me. Other than that, quilted cotton. Pelican is too damn heavy.

+1 for SKB for airline travel.

If what you want is a non-standard set of dimensions, find a company which makes "foot-locker" type custom containers. Tell them the dimensions that you want and see what they'd charge for a case.

A case with curved and grooved sides can be stronger for a given weight, or lighter for a given strength, than a case with flat sides.

Regardless, getting away from the weight thing, if I'm protecting guns against airline handling, I'll probably not quibble too much about the price. :)

Thanks for the SKB suggestions to the OP. I've been looking for a good case for my O/U and picked one up from Midway. I ended up doing the SKB Takedown Gun Case for Guns with 2 Barrel Sets up to 36": http://www.midwayusa.com/viewProduct/?productnumber=712048. Sounds like something that might work for you, too.
