WHy do they even go to the range?

Went to the range today. Playing with my new FAL (shot great, thank you). The guy two positions from me is sighting in his scoped rifle when his cell phone goes off. Ok, I can live with that, porbably an important guy. He then proceeds to hold his conversation seated at the shooting line, and of course, since 8-10 other people are shooting large caliber rifles, he has to shout to be heard, and keeps asking the person on the other end to repeat, because HE CAN'T HEAR THEM! well, duh. Not to mention he had to take off his hearing protection to use the phone.
I guess they're his ears, but for some reason having him scream into the phone was more distracting than the guy firing his 300 Magum farther down on the range.
My rant is done, soapbox is put away, thanks for listening.:banghead:

If he's SOOO important, why is he at the range instead of the office? Literacy tests for cell phones now!

Strikes me from here ...... however ''important'' he may or may not have been .... sensible thing mighta been to make his gun safe ... and walk back .... far enough at least to hear better.
More tempting for me in that situation ..... ''can I call you right back?''

I had a call at the range, once.
I cleared and benched my gun, and walked off the line before I answered.

Half the time my cell phone rings, I don't answer it - regardless of whether I'm busy or not. Just about the only person who gets through is my wife or close family member. I do return messages, though!
While reading your post, I was afraid you were going to say that he got upset that everyone kept firing, as if everyone was supposed to take a ten minute break until he finished his phone call. Something similar to that happened to me once.
I was at a public range once, and this guy was evidently trying out some new handloads, and when it was time for him to shoot - he RATHER LOUDLY requested that us peasants stop shooting so he could "listen" to his powder. He wasn't wearing any hearing protection of any kind, so since that happened a few years ago - he probably can't hear anything at all now.
There were probably 4 or 5 other shooters there, and we all just ignored him and kept on shooting. He got mad and left. We all laughed. Hard.

No, it just makes stupid, rude and inattentive people easier to recognize. There are plenty of us who can handle a phone, turn it off, ignore it or answer it where we're not in everyone's business. Problem is, when you see stupid people, they usually have a cell phone.
Remember, when people see gun crime, they assume guns turn everyone into criminals.

Ill admit to answering a cell phone from the GF, but I have electronic muffs and keep it to a normal tone of voice. She normally doesn't call me when at the range unless important, since I normally call when I'm done. Everybody else, waits.

I turn my cell off when I'm at the range... I don't want to be distracted, and I don't want others around me to be distracted.
My wife knows where I am, I can return the calls when I'm finished.

my cell doesn't ring that often and if it does I don't always anwser it especially if I'm at the range with daddy cause most people aren't calling me then or they know where I am. If it ever goes off at the range it will probably be a funny sight since it's usually in my back pocket and it vibrates when it rings. Heehee it's almost as funny as the hot brass dance only not as long. If it does go off I will either answer it and say I'll call them back or just not answer it.

Heh ... reminds me of my Uncle.
He put his cell phone in his shirt pocket but forgot to lock the keypad and went out back to do some shooting.
Now, my uncle is a great guy, but maybe a little odd. He has this great, deep voice and likes to sing while he's doing other things, to include shooting. Well, he was loudly singing and having a good ol' time shooting when he somehow hit one of his speed dial functions.
Later that day, his wife got a phone call from the minister of his local church. Seems he was very concerned because he had a five minute answering machine message that featured a wonderful rendition of a love song interrupted at times with sporadic gunfire.
Don't have a cell phone myself.

Leaving the post office yesterday, I stepped aside and let a guy with several packages go out ahead of me. Glad I did. A little 5'2" gal, head down and cell 'phone clamped to her ear, rounded a corner and slammed head-on into him. He was large, way over 200, and about 6'4". She bounced to her butt and immediately launched into a tirade about rude, inconsiderate men. Then she asked, "Well, isn't someone going to help me up". He shoved her cell 'phone out of the way with his foot, said "You're safer where you are" and left. Turned out to be the best part of my day :D

I don't turn my cell off, it might be important. I'll answer to ascertain if it is important and if not I'll hold the cell up towards the line and say "What? WHAT? I can't hear, I'm under fire, call back later..." and hang up.:D

Swingset,
I'd largely disagree with that based on my own experience, and also from reading various advice columnists, including Miss Manner and Emily Post (hey, I can always hope to improve myself! :) )
A number of people whom I know are very manners oriented and extremely considerate simply have no concept of how rude or invasive a cell phone can be.
I really think a lot of it stems from the fact that people still feel that their phone conversations are private, as if they were having the conversation in their home.
But other people? Yeah, they just don't care.
Me? I have a cell phone ONLY for emergencies while driving.

It's like when people take their cell phones into to gym. Okay, I can understand needing to stay in touch with family, kids, etc., but some people will jabber about nonsense for 30 minutes in the gym on their phones. And they wonder why they can't lose weight!

You can tell a lot from listening to your powder, actually. I hold long conversations with mine. You've got to ask your powder, are YOUR needs being met? How do you feel about CCI primers? What about Federal brass? It takes a while for powders to open up, esp. old Du Pont/IMR cases. But then the answers come, and you can learn a lot.

I teach at a small public college. Student cell phones go off in my classes, and I kick the phone owners out until the next class day. There is even a statement in all my class syllabi that offending cell phone owners will be kicked out of my classes for such interruptions.
About three weeks ago, I was in the men's room in one of the buildings. I heard a cell phone go off, and it sounded like it was coming from a nearby stall.
Someone answered the phone, and actually said the following,
"Hello?"....pause........... "Nothin' man, just sittin' here trying to take a dump."
I didn't know whether to laugh out loud or to rip open the stall door, grab the cell phone away from him, and beat him to death with it.

Hrrrrrumph!
My cell phone is for my convenience, it stays off untill I want to call someone, or if it's really importqant for someone to get to me in a time critical situation ( and that doesn't happen very often). Even then, it's my business, & I do what I can to keep it that way. It isn't that hard.
I just don't understand dweebs that yammer too loudly in public places (it's gotta be an attention-getting thing - ), I don't appreciate the irresponsibilty of those who think their perosnal business is more important than public safety (i.e. those who can't steer & talk).
Idiot Cell Phone Users are getting higher & higher on my list of retribution for when I'm elected God . . . .

I think the problem with cell phones is that they are still a relatively "new" item. And there hasnt been a real system of etiquette attatched to them. There was a time when people typically YELLED into the receiver of a phone so they could be heard so far away. No ones mother taught them how to handle a cell phone so they have to figure it out themselves. It just takes some people (stupid ones) a longer time to figure out how to behave properly with a new thing.

I just love it when folks at the range and complain about noise from other shooters. What they hell are they thinking by doing crap like TALKING on the phone????? Heck, I hope he doesn't make any loud noise, like maybe shooting a gun or something like that! Such a loud noise might scare the other shooters.
