new to this site. i shoot a percussion tc renegade 54 cal (for deer, elk, and hogs), and was wondering:
1. what bullet(s) you use
2. which cap (#11, musket)
3. which powder
just trying to get an idea as to what is popular here (and a few new ideas as well).
thanks for any responses.

Most the regulars here are an even split between long guns and revolvers. A few spark makers. Most prefer black powder but well use about anything that makes smoke.
Personally I'm a revolver guy, they out number the long guns twenty to one.

I have a T/C Hawken .50, usually shot for fun with 60-65 gr GOEX FFFg and PRBs, CCI #11 caps (std). I have also used both Pyrodex RS and Pyrodex P (with CCI #11 magnum caps) but this particular rifle seems to shoot better and more accurately with real BP. One of these years I'm going to try hunting with it and I intend to try and find a good conical load - in fact I have cast a bunch of 320gr REAL bullets but I've yet to fire one out of this rifle.
I also have a Pietta '58 Remington, I usually use Pyrodex P (28 gr), wonder wad and a .454 ball. Remington #10 caps fit the best on this one.

I shoot a Harper's Ferry 1803 flintlock, mine is an early copy made in 58 caliber (not authentic but still hits good). Patched round ball and gunpowder.
Also a 32 caliber flintlock I built back in the early 70s.
Another black powder rifle I use is an 1841 Mississippi rifle I converted to fire the 50-70 gov't cartridge.
There are others but that covers the most used long guns.

back in high school, before I could own a cartridge handgun, I carried a 51 Navy reproduction..
Fast Forward 30 years...
Last year I got back into BP and bought a Traditions .50 inline, an Pietta 1858 Remington and a Austin & Halleck .50 Plains Rifle..
Wife shakes her head, but sometimes, when I'm alone in the office.. I touch off a pinch of BP... Hey, she's got her incense, I have mine..
*edit cause I forgot the original question..
Bullets:
Rifles:
Traditions - 50 Cal Sabot .45 Cal 240 GR XTP Hunter Jacketed Hollow PT. 209 Primer
Austin & Halleck - Maxi Ball 320 or 340 Gr or .495 RB for plinking. CCI #11 percussion caps
1858 Remington - 22 grains of 777 and a .451 RB and CCI #11 percussion caps
multiple accessories... patches, lube, corn meal for the Remington, I have 2 moulds, but have not cast either.. Rapine .454-215 and a Lee REAL 320 gr..
I use 777 with the inline and the Remington (just cause it's easier to clean)
I use GOEX with the Austin & Halleck

About 10 bp derringers and 10 revolvers. I shoot roundball out of all of them with the occasional conical in my ML rifles during deer season and the occasional revolver cylinder loaded with Lee 200 grain conicals. Use mostly #11 caps with a few #10 when better suited for a particular gun. Use a lot of Pyrodex RS and P occasionally 777 and rarely the holy black cause its just hard to find.

CVA Optima Elite .50 cal. Right now it is sighted in for 100g pyrodex pellets and a 245 gr powerbuilt bullet. It shoots 2-2.5" from a rest at 75 yards, so I really need to get my hands on some powder and do some fine tuning. Since I hunt at 50-75y, it'll do but I would like to find a better load. I have gotten some shockwaves and some really tight sabots to work with... now to get some BH209 to play with.

I used to have a Traditions Pursuit xlt and a Pietta 1851 Colt but no more. The only bp gun I have right now is a TC hawken that I have completely redone. I stripped and tru-oiled the stock and bead blasted and bowned the metal. I also added a mag-spark 209 primer nipple and a tang peep sight. I haven't shot it in it's new form yet (this weekend I will though) but I have been shooting PRB's out of it. I'm going to try to put together a conical hunting load for it (I bought a few different kinds).
Hopefully soon I can get some more smoke poles; I'm thinking a 1858 remmy, a cap kentucky pistol, a flinter full stock kentucky rifle, and a renegade/ hawken with a 1:28 gm barrel....and maybe a TC Omega....it never ends...

I must be the only guy here with a remington 700ML. It's a .54 cal. And I shoot round balls. They are way more accurate than any conicals or saboted bullets that I've shot out of it so far. Usually I use 100-120 grains of Pyrodex or 2 of the 60 grain pellets.
I like it.

Pair of Colts - a '49 pocket and a '51 navy. I cast my own .380 ball for the navy with a Lee electric lead melter and Lee double cavity mold. For the .31 I buy .32 ball but want to buy a Lee mold for that one too. For powder I use 777 for it's clean up properties. I use an over powder felt wad on the navy with vegetable shortening (like Crisco your side of the pond) over the ball on both. For caps on the navy I use RWS as I have Treso cones. For the pocket I use CCI#11.
I'm sure I could improve on the performance of these loads by using real black powder but it's treated as an explosive here in Blighty so requires yet another licence and more red tape. 777/Pyro is less restricted.
Hope that's useful info.

"Little Bertha", my 8 gauge smoothbore, uses a 2 ounce .810 ball atop 135 grains of FFg black and a #11 cap, the standard load for this size gun.
The Brown Bess uses a paper cartridge which holds 65 grains of FFFg (priming and main charge together) and a .690 ball.
The .54 flint long rifle built by Jim Correll gets about 75 grains of FFg and a .530 patched ball. I prime with a pinch of FFFFg.
The .50 flint long rifle built by Gerry Vermeesch gets the same powder and priming charges and a patched .490 ball.
The old percussion Euroarms Kentuckian .44 uses 55 grains of FFg, a #11 cap and patched .440 ball.
I cut .010 cotton patches at the muzzle, lubricate with spit at the range and mutton tallow/beeswax if the charge will sit in the barrel for awhile.

Greetings!
I picked up a mail-order Pedersoli 12ga. Double in the early 80's; I used 'newspaper' wads and #6 to #4 on the Rabbits out by Edwards AFB. It worked great, until the Cal. Condors moved in.
My first handgun was a Lyman / Remington 1858, .44; I bought it at B&B Sales, No. Hollywood Store on April 17, 1982 (a year out of HighSchool). About seven years later, I started working at B&B Sales, Westminster. They made me wait fifteen days for it; some new Law that no one really understood was to blame.
I also get a kick out of my LeMat, a Very Classy revolver that I fell in love with after I saw it on the cover of an Am. Rifleman: 1978? I haven't tried the solid ball out of the .65" Bbl. yet, but I'm looking forward to it.
There are a few others that I NEED to take out & make smoke with... One of these weekends!
Be Well!

All I have right now is a Uberti .44 1858 Remington.
My current charge is 30 grains of Goex FFFg, Hornady .454 round ball, CCI standard No. 10 cap.
In the future, I plan to add the following as they can be afforded:
1853 Enfield Replica .58 Caliber
1860 Colt replica .44 Caliber
1851 Colt Replica with square triggerguard .36 caliber
Flintlock Committee of Safety musket .62 Caliber (I want something along the lines of a Brown Bess only with a smaller bore)
Flintlock Georgian Pistol .62 Caliber
Pedersoli Double Barrel Percussion 20 gauge shotgun with the barrels cut down to about 15"
I check Track of the Wolf and Dixie Gun works daily, but alas, I am a college student with a part time job. I may have to content myself with the Enfield and another revolver as they can be afforded and just live with that for a good long while.
Moharrow - Did you build that Dragoon pistol or is it one of the Indian replicas?

it started life as an indian replica, I had to rework the lock and replace the cheap stock with a decent piece of walnut, when I got it from a friend the stock was cracked from the trigger guard to the ball butt
its kind of a shame they don't spend a little more time on them. they could be really nice out of the box if they would use nicer wood and harden the sears and tumblers properly

I like all forms of shooting and BP in particular. I tend to shoot the ones that I lay hands on. Included is a project I am working on.
This blanket gun started out in Missouri where it was converted from a 12 gauge something. It kept Missouri safe but apparently ate too many of kwhi43's .32 cal balls. So it was promoted from Safe Queen in Missouri to Chief of Security in Yacolt Washington. It doesn't eat as much as the Howdah or the Walker so its job is fairly secure.

PS: Love that blunderbuss.
