Excerpts:

"A group of more than a dozen people met at a downtown cafe Saturday afternoon, some of them had unloaded semi-automatic pistols holstered to their belts with their ammunition clips readily available. The demonstration was put on by members of the "open carry" movement...

"Bye said the group, which held a similar event in Livermore last month with no problems, called police beforehand to make sure the event would be in compliance. Officers met with a handful of them in a nearby parking lot, including to check the weapons...

"'He said once police and others know what the law allows, it is not a big deal to carry a legal weapon in a legal manner.' Bye said it is not the police department's job to make opinions, but to enforce the law.

"'We do understand and view it as a legal act' to carry the unloaded weapons, Bye said. 'The fact people may disagree with it is inconsequential. Our position is the enforce the law. We are the enforcement, not the legislature.'"

Unloaded weapons? The horror!

Wait, So I'm clear. Could I have an unloaded semi without a mag in it with the slide locked back and carry a magazine in my pocket. So if I needed a gun I could pop the mag in the gun and release the slide and whammo have a loaded gun. Just curious.

You could, yes.

Does CA require that legal OC of all types of firearms must be in a holster?

I hope they keep it up!

We actually did a carry event like that in Pacific Beach last spring. Unsurprisingly, most of us who came were with the short haircut club.

What part of that state's OC law says the guns have to be unloaded? What the heck?

Or did they do that by choice?

A good place to start to answer your questions is opencarry.org (http://opencarry.org). Laws vary state to state, and they cover them.

The weapon must be unloaded and in a belt holster. The magazine/s cannot be concealed in a pocket. They can be carried in a mag carrier on your belt. However, you can cram your pockets with as many speed loaders and loose rounds as will fit, if you OC a revolver.
Carrying in a holster only applies to firearms that can be concealed. A legal rifle or shotgun can be carried slung on your shoulder or across your back as long as it's not loaded.

OK! This is seemingly small start, but sometimes small initial steps are appropriate when dealing with a situation like we see in California.

Best quote I have ever seen from a police officer, too bad up north the cops seem to think they are the legislators. (http://canadiangunnutz.com/forum/showthread.php?t=395652) (Registration required, bascially RCMP is appealing court orders to allow semi automatic (.22LR, but may reach farther then that) clones of "scary" rifles to no longer be prohibited in canada. )

What good is an unloaded handgun?

If you need a gun, chances are that you need it in a hurry.

Here are your options:

1. Unloaded gun.
2. No gun.

(3. Depending on area, you actually can get a concealed carry license in California, but we're ignoring this one because it's irrelevant to this discussion)

Which do you choose?

The pro guns can unholster and load that thing faster than I can say "California"

Given the legal choices of 1.) an unloaded gun or 2.) No Gun my choice is crystal clear. An unloaded gun.

I think of all of the major shootings (Columbine, MacDonalds, etc.) and if somebody had had an unloaded weapon and some ammo in their pocket or mag holster, the death tolls might have been much lower.

UNREAL ! I thought **** had the most restrictive gun laws anywhere !

^ they do, and this post is suspicious. I am visiting CA right now, and became very familiar with laws. Transporting guns to said event also requires it being unloaded and in a locked box in a trunk seperate from all ammo.

Link doesn't work for me.

Also, open carrying an unloaded gun is rediculous, and not really carrying at all. Boy, I wonder who the criminal will go after first?

Link to it happening or it's a barely-literate yahoo's speculation on the internet.

Yup, no matter, we hear people getting killed with semi-auto rifles in **** all the time too, and by people who have them illegally. All they do is impede the law-abiding from owning anything. The thugs don't care how many laws you have against what they carry or do.
