Hi y'all; I have been following THR for some time and have now finally decided to sign up, also to introduce my new blog:
http://swissgunblog.wordpress.com/
It is part of my new year's resolutions, to promote gun ownership over here in Europe and in particular in Switzerland. :D I'd be happy to get any comments and suggestions for improvement.

Welcome. You have a very nice blog there. In my opinion, Switzerland is a bellwether of small arms in the hands of citizens. I hope you fwill have plenty of good news to report.
I also hope to live long enough to see people doing the right thing because they care about their future, rather than because they fear criminal punishment. Our "news" media seem to focus on the negative more than the positive, and I hope you can avoid that trap.

Thanks for your kind words.
I am afraid that also in Switzerland, gun controllers are pretty strong. For instance, we will have to vote on a constitutional amendment in 2011 which would virtually ban private gun ownership. We expect a tough fight.

Thanks a lot, I know that video, liked it a lot. Will post it one of these days. It does indeed show quite well what Swiss gun culture is all about (although it is not shared by everyone over here of course).

Yes, Rimbaud rules; as one of my friends put it, all poets end up as gun smugglers :D
I don't know anything about new production GP-11. Although I know how to obtain some for my good ol' K31. I am not sure GP11s are not produced anymore (I believe they still are).

well, it's not in the civilian market.. it's stocked up at military arsenals, and planned to be used by the shooting societies for the years to come.
In Switzerland, you cannot buy any GP11 (or GP90 by the way) in any civilian gunshop.. You'll only find them in Military shooting range, or within your shooting society.
and now I'm going to finish you.. ;) it's sold 35ct a round ($ and swiss franc are nearly equals nowadays..)

The K31 is a fantastic rifle. Have you checked whether your have got a name tag in butt end of the stock? You might find the name and address of the original owner in the 1940s...

CT.
Yes I have the name tag, my k31 was made in 1955. The wood shows a lot of hard use, but the metal is pretty much new. I suspect the solider did a lot of hiking with it, and it was droped a lot and frozen judging by the dings.

March 14, 2010, 08:48 AM
I was thinking about getting a pepper spray. I was on the point of buying a Fox 2 oz unit but then I hesitated because I wasn't sure whether it would be too large to conveniently carry. Most of the time, I'm wearing jeans and a shirt or tee-shirt. My J-frame revolver fills one front pocket and my cell phone, wallet and keys are in the other. That does leave the back pockets but it can be uncomfortable to sit with large objects in a back pocket. Is there any reliable data on the effective range of different brands/sizes of pepper spray to help me make a judgment on how small a unit I can buy while still having something effective?
KonradBaumgarten
March 14, 2010, 08:52 AM
Especially due to ist size, I would really recomend the Key Defender I speak of in the blog post. A friend of mine had to use it once against some young guy who was hitting on a bus driver. The effect on the guy was immediate.
You can also use it to strike an effective blow after the spray.

I presume it has nothing to do with the service rifle referendum
I mean the referendum which is allegedly directed against gun violence and which is organized by leftist movements in Switzerland (it will be held in spring 2011). I guess it is what you call "service rifle referendum". But don't be mistaken: it also affects private gun ownership: if you want to acquire or possess a gun in the future, you would have to prove that you "need" it (as today, if you want to be allowed to carry a gun, you have to show that you need it because you are threatened etc).
btw: pump actions would be generally prohibited :cuss:
Where are you from, lykoris?

check my 1st thread in here.. I talked about the "initiative contre la violence des armes" for pages and pages..
as Konrad says, they want to introduce a "need clause" and to ban certain guns just because of the way they look or operate. Among them, FA (no matter they are already forbidden) and Pumpaction shotguns..
We need to start fighting this initiative right now..They are FULL OF LIES...

Excellent!!
What are the odds on the referendum passing?
Difficult to say for the moment. To a certain extent it depends on the daily news. However, I believe that many people here are in favor of a popular army, as opposed to a professional army. If we can get the message straight that this is the first step towards a professional army, it could be won. Also there are many hunters and sport shooters. They just need to be mobilized.

No, I expect the "conservative" parties SVP/UDC, FDP/radicaux and CVP/PDC to oppose it (but not as actively as you might wish...). But move your guns to Switzerland. In any case you might be better off if you already possess them here. You will still be able to move them back to Luxembourg if need be...

Which one? As the US, we have a federal constitution and 26 cantonal constitutions (like the states in the US).

Konrad,
I'd love to have more information or a source thereof that details the events and participants that lead to the banning of ccw in Switzerland, I understand it was a federal law that surpassed cantonal laws?
Is is envisable that it may be overturned and reversed? It's only been 10-12 years no?
Thanks!
Shung
March 21, 2010, 05:11 PM
it was in 1999, when the federal law surpassed cantonal laws yes... prior to that, lots of cantons had NO laws about carry... if you owned a gun, you could just carry it as you wished.
Nothing happened to make people things carrying was a danger to society.. it just seemed reasonnable to do it for some stupid people..
with the federal law, you need a permit to carry, and to get the permit, you need to proove a need...
to proove a need, you must prove that someone is directly threatening you, or must be rich enough (or politically connected)...
in fact, the need to PROOVE something actually supressed our right....
I don't see it overturned anytime soon.... the only way it could happend would be that violence and crime increase so drastically that they couldn't afford not letting people to defend themself.... but the risk is that the increase of violence and crime would 1st conduct to ban any firearm ownership...
lykoris
March 21, 2010, 06:09 PM
so essentially there was no ccw law as such...more the lack of a law(at a federal level) that prevented people from carrying their firearm on their person...and so they introduced a federal law to prohibit it across all cantons
did people actually carry a firearm on them for defense purposes? I presume they protested?
I presume with the current firearm application process 'defense' is removed as a reason to buy a firearm....so people tick sports shooting or hunting ? etc.
I'm curious to know more.
Have you not experienced more violence? In the form of eastern european criminal networks spreading west?
Shung
March 21, 2010, 06:51 PM
urban cantons like Geneva or Zurich already had cantonal laws to prevent people from carrying without permits, but most rural cantons had no laws, so as long as you legally owned a gun, you were also granted the right to carry it... I knew people that did yes.. and society wasnt more violent than now.. actually it's quite the opposite.. (lots of factors involved, not just the ban of carrying). The federal law levelled everything, from the bottom we can say..
Yeah, few of them protested to loosing their right to carry, but then, what else ? the silent majority was fine with it... who needs a gun, right ?
as for purchasing a gun, the "need" clause doesnt exist yet... you can buy a gun, just because you want so.. you don't have to officially say why.. You can still pruchase a gun and use it for home defense though.. this is perfectly legal. 4 months ago, 10km from here, a father and his family were home jacked.. the criminals had the bad idea to lock the family in the room that the father kept his .357mag revolver.... the result is that one of the bastard won't be able to walk as freely he was before.. ;)
of course, the increase of violence is mostly due to different "cultures" and traditions brought by foreign people, who for example will stab someone or beat him to death for reasons that would just have ended in a fair fist fight 20 years ago...
KonradBaumgarten

As I have come to understand and perhaps I am quite wrong. The shift in Switzerland has been the result of vast alien populations moving into the country and wanting the laws to reflect where they came from. Largely french radicals and socialists plus other populations from Iran and Iraq. I lament over Californian lefties and New York city lefties wanting to destroy Florida with their dead ways and means, but you poor folks got to be having a heck of time with the French.
Here in America there is no shortage of 'special' people who go on about Armageddon and the days of revolution etc. etc. etc.(really more annoying than threatening). Is there anything like that in Switzerland, folks standing up and going "Hey we are here because of our values, our independence, our refusal to be like the rest of Europe and lose our rights to self-defence, had we been like the French or Belgian, Hitler would have owned us. Had we been so quick to defer to the 'state' for all our hopes and protections we would have been under the shoe of the Nazis or Soviets."
I had a lot more to say but it wasn't highroad so I got rid of it.

You might browse the NRA sight, and even contact them for information. Say what you will, they have a long history of rolling back constrictive gun laws, and they might be able to point you in the right direction strategy wise.
Personally I'd say start going after the young ones. Start teaching them self reliance, and self responsibility. Preferably formally in school if you can swing it. Then they'll grow up knowing they should take responsibility for themselves, and not expecting the government to take care of them. From there it's a short hop to wondering why the government has any business telling them they can't own ANYTHING much less firearms in their own homes. I firmly believe that many of America's firearm restrictions come from the people not only expecting the government to take care of them, but not believing they can do it themselves because they've been taught dependence in our schools from an early age. So they don't trust anyone to take care of themselves and so vote to disallow the means.
Fortunately in the last few years we've been able to reverse some of that.
Good luck.

I was really glad to see that news! Switzerland has always been a mountain fortress of sanity in an otherwise insane continent. For a long time the rest of the nations were out to slaughter each other, and Switzerland stood apart from the madness. Now it's all kumbaya and love parades in the flat lands, but the pendulum will doubtless swing back.

Cripes, <edit> politics have reached into the very vein of a free and polite society.
Your blog is awesome by the way, and congratulations to all the pro gun Swissmen for the defeat of stupid.

Great pictures of the ladies in switzerland, we need more like those. Nice mothers pushing their kids in strollers with rifles on their backs. Gives us room to say, well our mothers did so why can't we.

I notice that not one of the Policia in the video actually has a gun trained on the bad guy.
The first cop cut is carrying his shotgun like he is walking back from a day of hunting.
Stupid gets what stupid deserves.

Remember, leftists aren't against people possessing guns - as long as those people are leftists.
The Revolution can't really begin until the Counter-Revolutionaries are properly disarmed.
As long as everyone is armed, everyone will have to be polite to each other.

Hey Konrad, I wanna thank you for your blog and your posts----I spent some time yesterday going thru all of it/them and I'm very impressed with both your thoughts on firearm ownership, and your perseverance. Well done, Sir. Also I was also a bit disturbed about the whole gun-give-back thing in Britain a few years ago (I was not even remotely aware of that crap), so I posted a couple of those vids for my Limey and Ozzie friends on another forum. Seems it was as bad as it looks in the vids. I highly recommend the rest of the members here to watch it as well.
Keep up the good fight....
