I have the opportunity to pick up an SAR-8 in excellent condition for a good price. I'd like to get some informed opinions from you rifle folks out there. Thanks in advance for your help. Eamonn

If you're looking at the Greek made rifle with a stamped receiver, buy it. They are excellent rifles and every bit as good as German HKs. They're built on HK licensed machinery. I had one for awhile and regret selling it.
If you're looking at the American made rifle with an aluminum receiver and an optic rail built in....run like the wind.

Jack, not disregarding your advice, just to add to my previous post; It is American made and aluminum, however the seller states it has a lifetime warranty and he's had no problems with same. And if you have any particulars on why I should run like the wind, please let me know. Thanks. Eamonn

Well, it turns out that the "lifetime" warranty Springfield offered isn't so lifetime. They no longer stock parts for the SAR and in several cases have offered shooters credits toward M1As when their SARs couldn't be repaired.
The Greek made rifles are exact scopies of the HK, the American made rifles are not. If I remember right, it's been awhile, the aluminum receivers show wear much more quickly and the small parts that Springfield used were sometimes not of high quality. I want to say there was a problem with the steel trunion and the aluminum reciver....but....
Go over to http://www/hkpro.com and/or http://www.hk91.com and do a search for SAR-8.
If the price was really good, it might be worth the chance.....but do some reading first.
Alternatively, check out Ohio Rapid Fire's HK clones. They come with a warranty and Todd (no not that Todd) is a stand up guy. The basic G3/91 clone is $600.
Edited for the ORF link.....http://ohiorapidfire.com/

Jack19, thanks for the well informed reply. I decided not to make the purchase based on your help, among others. Regards, Eamonn
