I am assembling an AR-15 .22lr and I want a tactical looking scope that can magnify a target at 100yrds like its 5-10 ft away. I'd like to keep it the $100-200 range. Has anyone had success with one in particular?

Mueller (http://www.muelleroptics.com/) manufactures some good quality reasonably priced optics which is popular with many folks over on the rimfirecentral forum boards.

I've always had good luck with Weaver Classic scopes. They aren't Leupolds, but very good quality for their low cost.

I was going to recommend the Weaver classics. One of my favorites for the money also. I kinda figured they wouldn't be tacticool though.

Theoretically, if you want a scope to make a 100 yard target(300 feet) look like it is only 10 feet away you would need 30x magnification, though in reality it is probably a little more. To make it look 5 feet away you are going to need roughly 60x magnification.

Most tactical scopes aren't much above 10x, and certainly not 30-60x. They tend to not need to see a person so close that they appear only 5 to 10 feet away. They also don't need to know which pair of threads they are going to be placing thing bullet between.

So do you want an image that looks 5-10 feet away, or do you want a large field of view and moderately quick target acquisition? Two different beasts.

Second!

I love mine. Works way too good on a La Rue LT-1 Scope mount, too. Always returns to zero no matter how much I remove and reinstall it.

for tactical looking I have no idea, but for a good cheap scope, that gives good magnification, I have several of the Tasco Varmint series scopes, in 6x24 power, and they have been quite fine. you could try millet or super sniper i suppose, they usually have a tactical look to them.

Dangit.. ya beat me to it :)!

I was going to suggest one of these. I put one of these on a 10/22 Archangel setup I gave my nephew for Christmas.

He loves it! I had him doing "range splits" against old soup cans in no time :). He go so good at that I started rolling clay pidgeons across his FOV/FOF for him to snap shoot at.

BTW: he's 11 yrs old.

Fair warning about that scope though.. first thing you do is dismantle the base and lock time the hell out of it!
