Member reticence?
P95Carry
November 13, 2003, 03:41 PM
Ok - I am in the ''regular/active/addicted'' category!!:p
But .... been happening to notice at times members who joined at beginning ... Dec 2002 .... and yet have hardly been along much to actually post ... maybe 30 - 40 posts.
Only noticed this because when I see a new name I look at post count etc to see ''how new'' .... but then found some who have been signed up longer than me and other ''addicts''.!
So - curiosity really ...... a question to those guys. Why don't you come along more? I know many people are well satisfied with lurking .. plenty to read and much to be learned but .... seems a pity sometimes some of these members do not post a bit more often. Does anything put them off?

Along the same lines, I've learnt more posting than just reading. Since I frequently post erroneous information, getting the straight scoop in response is an excellent learning tool.

Speaking for myself, if I find a topic that I feel I need to comment on I will do so only if someone else hasn't posted the same comment already.
No need for me to repeat what another has said. There are a few cases where I'll post my response regardless of whether it has been said before.
We don't have an option on here to show us nodding our heads in wise agreement with a particular post. Apparently, nodding only works face to face.
I think it all boils down to individual personality. Some of us like to post (talk) about anything and everything. Some of us like to sit back and read (listen).

I'm in the latter group.:D
Actually, I'm kinda suprised my post count is as high as it is. I've already passed the number of times I posted on TFL, where I spent 3yrs.

Well, if you have been on an Internet gun forum for any length of time you have heard, participated in and no longer care about somewhere around 50% of the topics of any such forum (9mm vs. 45, Weaver vs. Isoceles, Glock vs. 1911, AR vs. AK, etc.)
Since a lot of us came here from the now defunct The Firing Line, lots of those topics have been hashed out and I now generally don't care to rehash them on a regular basis.
Secondly, in my one-man attempt to make the Internet somewhat less error-ridden, I am trying to limit myself to subjects I have direct experience with or extensive training in. This helps to limit my commentary quite a bit on its own.

Thx already guys .. this is purely an ''interest/curiosity'' thread. I do not in any way mean to imply that because people don't post that they are in some way deficient!:p
I am just a verbose ole fart .. and no kinda example for anyone :D
I know full well that lurking and reading is well adequate for many ... no probs with that at all. Guess I was aiming too at the (few hopefully) who joined, posted a bit and then sorta went away - for a long time. In case there was anything they had found irksome perhaps. Of course too, like any board . and as Mike notes .. there will always be many who sign up ''for the hell of it'' .. probably never intending to return or forgetting they ever joined anyways! The ''zero posters''!
I think Hkmp5sd's comment has validity too ..... Along the same lines, I've learnt more posting than just reading. Since I frequently post erroneous information, getting the straight scoop in response is an excellent learning tool.

Hmm.. tough call. I count myself as an addict (lots of interesting things to read here), but I don't post a whole lot. I suppose it is because I don't have anything else to add to the comments that I already see (vast majority are well thought out). Maybe I should join in and post a bit more regularly ;) I made the mistake of lurking for four months or so before registering.. maybe I'd have more than 5 posts if I had registered earlier

"Guess I was aiming too at the (few hopefully) who joined, posted a bit and then sorta went away "
Isn't that akin to saying, "Raise your hand if you are not here."?
The people that fall into that category will not be replying to this thread.

I don't post a lot, as I don't have anything I want to add to the conversation. Just like talking in person - if there's something I want to add, I'll add it. If I have a question, I'll generally do my own search to find the answer before posting here.

Spiff, are you taking classes at the CR Sam School of Bulletin Boards?;)
Yeah, I think that I am addicted too. I mostly hang around the general and L&P forums, because I know more in those areas than in specific realms of the gun-world.
Its odd that you should mention the whole "post counts of members thing." I was really bored one day, and noticed that on the Top 25 page that you dont see any other months except Dec2002 and Jan2003 until me (on page 4), and then until page 7 you see about 2-3 Marches and Febuaries. Its weird to see dec dec dec dec jan jan jan dec JUNE dec dec jan... makes you wonder just how adicted I am...:scrutiny:
I used to post alot at the Mercedes-Benz forums until I came here. There is a boatload more activity here, and much less flaming than on the open boards. The tech stuff is damned informative though. Did you know that on 30 years worth of Benzes that the reason for the washboard-like nature of the tail lights was to wrap the air around them and keep at least 50% of the lights clean? I learned so much stuff about my car and learned that what I thought were design quirks were some engineer's intended design to enhance the functionality and saftey of the car. Its fascinating stuff.
Still, I learn more about guns and politics (and communicating my ideas in a concise:scrutiny: and cordial manner). Its a good place, and you can learn alot by just reading. I really need to just sit and absorb some TFL. I had an opprotunity to join TFL waaaaay back when, but didnt.:( Guns just werent that important to me back then.:scrutiny: (be easy, I was 17...)

One of the things I see here alot is what I call the "First Church of the Second Amendment Incarnate, Preacher Jefferson T. Washingmouth, DD, Presiding", ie someone will post a typical piece of anti gun idiot fluff like ya read in newspapers every day, then the masses of posters will rise to their feet like on a hot Sunday in the church and shout and scream, "praise the Second Amendment, down with the jackbooted thugs", "Thank you forefathers, bring back our freedom", "yeah, praise be!" and so on....

I am definitely addicted to THR, just like I was to TFL and the Compuserve forums before that.
I spend an hour or three here each day, but seldom post because I don't have that much to contribute.
Maybe it's a case of keeping my mouth shut and thereby appearing a fool, rather than opening it and removing all doubt.
Or maybe it's too late for that as I am over a hundred posts. :scrutiny:

Generally I'll only post if someone hasn't already mentioned what it is I'm going to say. Then again, someone already mentioned that here, so you can ignore me now. :)
I also tend to find that many people spend more time speaking than listening, so I prefer to take in whatever it is that others say, then formulate a response if it is needed. No sense in telling someone something that they already knew. I have quite a few friends that will interrupt me when I'm speaking and ask me a question that would have been answered if they didn't interrupt. This is a little different on message boards, but I think you all get the point.

Since I fit as neatly into the category of non-poster as anyone you will find, I can at least offer my reasons.
When I signed up here, I thought I was at a place in my life where I was going to have more time to participate. That was just wishful thinking.
Since I first registered and made a few posts, I have been through the end of a long term relationship, moved 1400 miles across the country, and still managed to work 70-80 hours per week.
When I do have some spare time, I am more likely to go fishing, go for a long walk, or turn to my first love: READING.
I just checked back in here less than a week ago after several months of not logging on at all-in between jobs for once.
So I would say that it is not that I have been offended, or put off by anyone, just a lack of time that I had available.
On a brighter note, I may be back to working in the industry again-gainfully employed as a gunsmith, but it is not yet certain.

umm.... mostly what WR Olsen said.
I'm usually here 5 or 6 time a week.
I'll add something if I've got something new and constructive to say but usually someone has already said so why waste bandwidth with echo?
If I have a question, I'll do a search first and 49 time out of fifty, I'll find the answer there.
There's talkers and there's listeners (or posters and readers if you will) I guess I'm just more of a listener/reader

On some other forums I participate in, it isn't uncommon for people to simply post a 'Yup' or even just a smiley to bump their post-count. This board generally has people wise enough to understand that neither a numerical accounting of your participation nor tenure on the board give any indication of knowledge or attitude.

I am here every day of the week except Sunday. (otherwise I would not have anything else to do while I am at work)- This is also one of the few websites I can access that is not restricted under "weapons" category by my company. I don't post very often as others on the board always say what I would have said anyway (and they always manage to post it first anyway) . No need to keep restating the obvious.

This post must be aimed at me. I lurked on TFL since the beginning and got up to 25 posts by the time it shut dowm. I have continued in my ways here. I usually only post when I have something to add that hasn't already been said. Otherwise most of my posts would be some variation of "yeah, me too." I read many of the posts (including the latest 9mm vs 45, kidbillions on gunbroker, and glock vs. 1911 threads), but am content to sit back and learn. I have learned so much and been entertained so many times here (the lawdog files are great). This place is truly great.
