Kerry Takes Aim at Dean Positions on Guns
Fri Oct 31,10:00 PM ET

By MIKE GLOVER, Associated Press Writer

COLO, Iowa - John Kerry (news - web sites) charged that Democratic rival Howard Dean (news - web sites) has a history of pandering to the gun lobby by opposing a ban on assault weapons.

Dean said Kerry was distorting positions he took while running for governor of Vermont.

On Friday Kerry, campaigning in central Iowa, passed around National Rifle Association questionnaires that Dean had filled out in 1992 and 1994 as evidence. Kerry said that Dean used those questionnaires to get the backing of the powerful NRA while Congress was struggling to pass the assault weapons ban.

"During the time that we were struggling and every law enforcement officer in America wanted to pass it, Howard Dean was asking for the NRA's endorsement and he got it," Kerry said.

Kerry made his remarks on a farm about an hour northeast of Des Moines, where he planned an afternoon of pheasant hunting. Dressed in blue jeans, a flannel shirt and rubber boots, he spoke against a backdrop of stacked hay bales, lit by a row of television lights.

"When I go out there and hunt, I'm going out there with a 12-gauge shotgun, not an assault weapon," Kerry said.

"I've been a hunter since I was 12," he said.

Dean's campaign immediately denounced Kerry as one of the "Beltway Boys," who have made a pattern of attacking Dean. Spokeswoman Sarah Leonard said Dean has raised the issue of assault weapons many times on the presidential campaign trail.

"Governor Dean has always supported a ban on assault weapons," Leonard said. "To suggest otherwise is to peddle a pack of untruths and Iowans don't appreciate dishonesty."

Dean routinely argues that he favors current federal gun control laws, wants to close the gun show loophole and, beyond that, wants states allowed to go their own way.

"I come from a rural state with a very low homicide rate," Dean told reporters in New Hampshire. "We had five homicides one year. It's a state where hunting is a part of our life. I understand that's not the traditional Democratic position."

Kerry rejected that argument.

"You cannot favor federal gun control and allow the states to do it their own way," Kerry said. "That's a complete contradiction."

The attack is the latest against Dean, who along with Dick Gephardt (news - web sites), sits atop the field of contenders for Iowa's leadoff precinct caucuses in January. Dean's rise in the polls has been accompanied by rising attacks from his rivals.

"I believe we must put the safety of our children and families ahead of special interests like the NRA," Kerry said. "I will never pander to the extremist NRA for personal or political expediency."

I wonder how long that pheasant had been out of the holding pen before that liberal democrat shot it?

Every law enforcement agency wanted to pass it? I doubt it, but even if it's true . . .do we always grant the police whatever powers they ask for?

I guess he's not going coyote or prairie dog hunting. Well, but then again, everybody knows the Second Amendment is all about pheasant hunting, isn't it?

Remember Hillary's quote about using a rifle for duck hunting?

If I were an outfitter and were asked to take an obviosly antigun senator pheasant hunting, I would hand him a Remington 700 to carry. If he knew the difference between a rifle and a shotgun, you cold say you were just funning with him, if not, it would make for an incredibly funny photo op.

"Hyperbole"?!? Hunh. I always thought that meant "exaggeration" (http://dictionary.reference.com/search?q=hyperbole). I guess now it means "bald faced lie."

I sure as hell bet the PHEASANTS feel differently about that!.

I watched Kerry on Leno last night and he looked even slimier there than on the news. He rode a Harley up on the stage all decked outin his leathers. Trying to be a good ol' boy. Made me wanna barf.

But you know, stunts like that might just get him elected, if we don't do something about it and start supporting candidates who BELIEVE in the constitution.

HUNTERS, LISTEN UP:

Semi auto shotgun = assault weapon

Bolt action rifle = sniper rifle

Pump action shotgun = "military style" weapon

They are fools if they think they are safe. Or maybe they just don't really care.

Like I've said before, Kerry is just trying to pose as the biggest 'manly man', not unlike AL Gore with the orange makeup in a botched attempt to make him look tan and virile or the wolf lady he hired to teach him to become an alpha male.

I just can't wait until the rest of the 9 dwarves catch on and start stumbling all over themselves to outdo eachother in this area.

I just wish they would be jumping over each other trying to prove who's going to support the 2nd amendment more.

Kerry is like the rest of them. He is a chameleon trying to blend in pretending to be something he's not and fool non 2A commited gun owners into voting for him. Shame on anyone who falls for it.

Kerry does not handle a weapon like he knows what he is doing. It would make me very very nervous to go hunting with him. He is the type of hunter who would accidently shoot another hunter. He hates guns.

I just wonder why all nine democrats stay in the running. They can't get much time on the debates. I feel it is a setup for Hillary to get elected as a dark horse during the democratic convention. It just seems so weird that even with 2% they keep going to the debates and they get less than 10 minutes to speak, because there are so many of them. Most of them just rag on Bush. They don't seem to have answers to very important questions. Wouldn't make me want to vote for any democrat. Most are so ANTI- GUN, IMO
