My father in law gave me to hold on to a couple of 581-s's that he had around for sometime and told me he wanted the boys to have them. He had picked them up at a auction quite a while back they came from a boy scout camp. I was thinking about scoping one up and seeing how accurate I could get it as I have recently joined a local bench rest club and they have some fun shoots for 22lr. Cleaned them up this weekend they where filthy and took them to the range they both seem to shoot really well but neither will eject the spent cases, and they had plugs put in which I took out where the clips should go, I wasn't worried about getting new clips as they seem to be available but I don't wanna sink alot of money into them either. So is this an easy fix or major deal? Any idea on price, and if it is an easy cheap fix is it possible to work on the trigger they both seem pretty hard pulls. Thanks in advance.

I may have a 581 owners manual at home since I used to have one. Here’s Brownell’s breakdown of it:

http://www.brownells.com/.aspx/sid=815/schematicsdetail/

Is it case extraction or ejection you’re having the problem with? Going from memory, the 2 extractors are held in place by a band-type spring wrapped around the bolt. You can pry this off carefully and remove the extractors for a good cleaning. The right extractor has a hook edge for the case while the left one is just for guidance until the case hits the ejector.
If you have access to a small drill press you can drill and tap 2 holes in the trigger housing to add adjustments for pretravel and overtravel. The trigger housing is removed by backing off the screw that goes against the receiver and driving the pin out. At one time Remington sold the 541 trigger separately, a lot of shooters added this to get a better pull. You can also replace the trigger spring with a lighter one to reduce the weight.
Magazines are available from Brownells.

Okay that is done cleaned them both up real well both still don't work, where on that diagram you posted where is the ejector? It had the kit in it that made it a single shot, am wondering if there is something missing that helps kick out the spent cases.

Took them into a gunsmith they needed a magazine guide magazine clip and bolt to hold it all on. Apparently the guide has the extractor. The plastic kit they put in to make them single shot had them as well but didn't hold up to well is going to cost me $160 bucks to get them both up to speed with a 10 round clip apiece not to bad and I can put them on myself.
