Do you have a preference? Me, I started out preferring semi autos but I've learned a quality wheelgun is in a class buy itself!

Semi.

But I'm warming back up to the wheelgun as time goes by.. :uhoh:

I love them both.
But I think that everybody knows where I stand on this one.
A good wheelgun has more than class. It has soul.

You left out the bit about the khakis!

When I find a Colt or S&W 1917 in my price range, I'll have my first carry revolver. Otherwise, I'll stick to semi-autos as I have since the beginning.

I'm just the opposite!! I started out a revolver man with a Ruger Blackhawk, (which my "ex" got in the divorce :cuss: :fire: ) but moved to autoloaders. What caused this radical transition was Pistolet Makarova!! In the early nineties, before our dear departed (I wish) President Clinton saw fit to have them banned, I obtained my first Makarov! I was hooked on bottom feeders and have been so ever since!! :D

Oh BTW, not to be accused of being "prejudiced", I do own two, count 'em, two revolvers: A vintage "pre 73" UNALTERED Ruger "three screw" single six, which never gets fired, and a Taurus M605 .357 snub nose, which was fired just enough times to remind me why I don't carry revolvers!!! :neener:

Like both but prefer revolvers. I stopped and checked the stash and I do own more wheelguns than bottom feeders but it's not a runaway yet. And I have several semis that I like more than a few of my revolvers.

I prefer the semi-auto for SD, due to the ease of reloading.
I prefer the revolver for hunting, due to the longer barrel and better trigger.

I like Wheelies. They just feel better in my hand, except for a milspec 1911a1.

Autos spit brass everywhere makes it hard to find to reload.

I have the most experience using semi-autos and currently own only one wheelgun, but I see that situation changing in the near future. Now I realize what fun and appreciation I have been missing out on by neglecting the revolver scene.

I seem to bounce back and forth, but right now I am leaning more towards S&W revolvers. In handguns, I am a bit specific in my wants for most applications: S&W revolvers and 1911 autoloaders. I own a few other handgun types that are all purpose-specific firearms.

By sheer numbers, I have many more revolvers than autoloaders. I always seem to return to revolvers due to simplicity (not too many failure drills), but I sure like the trigger and flatness of the 1911.

MikeJ
November 14, 2003, 10:39 AM
I voted for both as my current favorite calibers to shoot are the 9mm and .38 special. My auto loaders number about 2 to 1 compared with my revolvers but that gap will be lessening. :D

I have almost as many semi-autos as I do revolvers.

But, I count myself to be firmly in the revolver camp when it comes to preferred shooting device.

Gotta say BOTH; semiautomatics are great, but I got my start in handgunning with a revolver, and I still think thats a good way to get started.

I'll have to say both. I started out liking just semis. I liked the way they looked, felt, and shot. I liked the higher capacity. While this is still true, I like the way a snub-nosed revolver conceals. Plus, there is just something about a big bore revolver that calls to me.

But all the specops teams carry semi-autos not revolvers.

Uhmm.......The French GIGN anti-terror teams carry .357s.;) I know, it's France, but still.....

I like both. Different tools for different problems.
Semi-autos are best suited to SD and action shooting sports.
Revolvers OTOH are better suited to hunting due to larger calibers available. Revolvers are also more utilitarian. They can fulfill many roles simultaneously as SD, trail/work guns, precision shooting, and hunting.
.22lr handguns are excepted from the above generalization since a round fired from a Buckmark will be the same as on fired from a SingleSix.

Both: Not only semi-autos and revolvers but also single shots.

They just provide different satisfactions.

The specops comment was tongue in cheek...seems like there's always some pull towards whatever pistol (Kimbers as of late) if some highspeed group is using them.

I find revolvers very uncomfortable to shoot (ergonomics), and pretty bulky compared to autoloaders of the same "class", so you can guess which one I voted for.

Besides, semi-autos are so much more tactical. :neener:

10-Ring my friend, it really depends on the occassion.
As posted under the General Discussion Forum, lately
my interest have been with revolver's; this after carrying a
.45 caliber SIG-SAUER P220A for a number of year's. So, I
had to vote for BOTH!

I voted "Both". While I prefer semis for carry (I carry a Makarov) I still like wheel guns, particulary single actions. I have a singel action .22LR/.22Mag thats a blast to shoot.

The next handguns on my "to buy list" are:

Beretta Jetfire .25 ACP
Ruger Valqero in .44-40

I hear that both are being "dis-continued" so I better get them as soon as I can :(

The revolver is much more reloader friendly. No bending over and crawling around chasing brass.

I love both.

They each have their advantages. Autos offer a lot of firepower in a compact package. Buy a good brand and they can be almost as reliable as a revolver.

That being said, the only gun that I keep readily available in the bedroom is a Smith & Wesson 357. There is just something to be said for a gun that you never have to wonder if it's loaded, will never jam and has no safety to manipulate :)

Right now my two carry guns are Para 12.45 and Kahr MK40.

I have had times when I had concern:

1.I went to a public restroom. As I was leaving a "youth" was standing in the doorway with large knife and said "give me your money". I said that I did not have any, which was true. He ran, and let me live. I had no way of protecting myself. I felt so weak. I was not old enough to own a gun.

2. Motorcycle gang blocking a road where I knew a carjacking/assault had occurred about 1 month before by motorcycle gang in rural Florida. I had a Dan Wesson 44 mag in the car...loaded. I floored my car and they scattered, but chased me. I had the gun in my hand when I had to stop behind traffic at a traffic light. They chickened out. Lucky for them.

3 Had my apartment door kicked in by a home invader that probably followed me home from the grocery store because I was driving a Porsche. I heard noise and had a Charter Arms 44 SPL that I was bringng up, just after my door was kicked in, and the home invader stopped charging and ran. I believe his clothing prevented my carpet from being soiled.

4. I was driving home from work when I saw that the car next to me was a car full of "Gang Members" that were tailing an elderly woman in a Mercedes and were motioning like they were targeting her. I had a Glock 30 in the glove compartment and felt confident honking at them and waving my finger. Thet took off weaving through traffic. The woman in the Mercedes never knew anything.

5. Was at an ATM on a sunny Sunday afternoon. As I was finishing the transaction A car pulled up behind me with 5 "youths" with bandannas on their heads. They were in the handicapped space. They were saying "yougeddim, no yougeddim". I grabbed my money and ATM card and made haste back to my car. I had a colt ponylite .380 in my pocket. When I was in my car, the other car peeled out of the parking lot.

Once I had no weapon, twice I had fairly powerful revolvers, twice I had semi-autos. I currently carry a Kahr MK40 if I can't conceal easily and a Para-Ordnance 12.45 LDA when I can conceal. The concealability seems to outweigh the reliability of revolvers. But, if I had my choice I would have my Mossberg 500 with 00B.

mountainclmbr, excellent examples. You have led quite a life. Glad you made it out of all those situations okay.

I carry revolvers and semi-autos. My most carried piece is a S&W 642: simple, reliable, lightweight, small, powerful enough (I believe) with 158-gr. LSWCHP +P to take care of most confrontations.

I voted both - my only gun was a wheelgun for many years, lately been shooting mostly semi's. I guess I'm slightly partial to my ole 586 but I don't shoot it much lately.

Both. I own the same amount of both actually though not by design. I like my 686+ as much as my 1911 though I think I am SUPPOSED to favor the Colt by a large margin! :)

I wonder whether there is a division based on age, with the younger set preferring the "coolness" of the semi due to the inspiration of their movie heroes. (it's always the less cool, older cop carrying the revolver in those cop/buddy pics). That's probably why I'd give a tip to the revolvers if push came to shove-kind of a playful jab at the wannabe "Rambos." :D

started off with autos-extra capacity and such.now, prefer a wheelgun.ive gone away from alloy receivers, plastic stuff and fancy do dads to a simple cylinder and double action trigger- and a powerful round.I do have 2 autos that i shoot regurarly for plinking and target practice but i prefer the DA wheelgun in 357 mag or 44 mag for hunting and such.i am considering the 2nd auto,a makarov,a good personal protection piece.price was right,no plastic parts and simple design.ballistics seem good and accuracy is better than most autos i have owned.

I own 3 revolvers and 3 semi-autos. For self defense I would much rather have a good reliable Glock or maybe a 1911. A walk in the woods calls for me to have a revolver. I voted for Semi's because I do shoot them much better. But each has its place, some in your nightstand and some in the field.

In the beginning of the POLL, it seemed fairly even in the voting. Now, it looks like the semi autos are pulling away....interesting.
