Hello everyone,

I'm pretty new around here, posting wise but lurking for a while. I thought I would post a tad about myself and what my collection consists of to help a question I have.

I'm 28 and a civilian contractor working at an Air Force base. I am a Veteran of 8 years in the USAF as a 2A571 (Heavy Aircraft Maintenance) aka Crew Chief. Never carried a duty weapon beyond annual M-16 qualifications:rolleyes:.

Currently in my locker I have:

GLOCK G22 .40 Caliber. Added Night Sights and a "slug plug" to the void behind the mag well to help guide magazines for reloading.

Kimber Pro Tac-II 1911 .45 ACP. No mods yet since it's still very new. Only 50 rounds through it so far.

Taurus Wheelgun

Rock River AR-15 lower, Stag Arms upper in 5.56 NATO. Newest of the collection and this is gonna suck my wallet dry modding. Can't wait :D

Weatherby Vanguard .30-06. Hunting rifle, accurate as all getout but I forgot how much that cartridge hates my shoulder:banghead:

Mossberg 500 18 in. barrel. Couldn't help adding a few goodies and now it's "Tacticool":banghead: I use it for trap and skeet as well as the standby for HD.

Marlin .30-30 lever action. FUN FUN FUN:evil:

And the good old Ruger 10/22. Got it from my dad as a 12 year birthday present. Planning on giving it to my son when he's old enough. I taught him how to shoot with it and he was doing 3 in. groups at about 25 yards. For a 6 year old shooting for the first time I was pretty impressed:D I might be a bit biased too;)

Anyway I was trying to think of what I would like next. I'm a fan of medium-long range sharpshooting. In the neighborhood from 300-800 yards is about where I want to be proficient and comfortable before I look at the 1K mark.

Been looking at the Remington 700 and heard good things about them, both the .300 Win Mag and .308 rounds. But I also wanted something not so "common".

My sights are currently set on a Romanian or Chinese made PSL-54C, basically a "Dragunov" clone. Looking at Gunbroker and a few other places claim to have NIB, scoped and full "issue" kit for around $800. http://www.gunbroker.com/Auction/ViewItem.aspx?Item=153913912

Any opinions on these? I would love to hear likes, dislikes, facts and rumors on this particular rifle or model. If a different model or origin is preferable please let me know.

i think you may be disappointed in the performance of the PSL. it's 2-3 MOA gun on most days and it's pretty tough to find match grade ammo for it, contributing to the so-so accuracy. they're neat and fun and if you're just looking to ring the gong at 600, it should be fine. if you're wanting more accuracy i'd go for a bolt action. either a remmy 700 like the 700P or SPS Varmint or a Savage heavy barrel. .308 is cheaper to feed if you don't reload and there are plenty of choices in factory match ammo out there. if your .30-'06 and your shoulder disagree, i'd stay away from the .300 WM. both of the above guns are available in .223 also if you want even even cheaper ammo and a less sore shoulder. if you want to reach out to 800 yards with it, you'd be better off with the 700P since it has a 1:9 twist and can stabilize longer, heavier bullets like the 77 gr SMK.

good luck and let us know what you decide.

Bobby

There's a lot of discussion over the PSL and how it works better with light ball 7.62x54 but if I had a spare $600 I would pick one up. 7.62x54 surplus ammo is so cheap how can you say no? Speaking oh which $800 seems way to high for a PSL, I would check out JG Sales here:

I also noticed a lack of any older firearms on your list. Get a C&R and start having new toys shipped directly to your door.

Thanks for the quick feedback so far. I'm not focused on anything particular and kinda just checking out what's out there. The Remington and the Savage we both on my radar for quite some time when I bought my AR :D.

A note to the ammo for Babarsac. I did some research about the surplus rounds available in regards to the corrosive and non-corrosive and that is a "red pen" against the cartridge.
Contrary to "video game" belief the Dragunov isn't a Sniper Rifle, it's designated a Marksman Rifle if I understand correctly. Basically the best shooter or two in a platoon would get issued one for combat.

Keep the opinions coming, I very much appreciate the input.

Hello,
As you already know , the PSLs are really not up to "sniper grade " accuracy.
The up side to them is they are a cheaper semi-auto .308 class of rifles , that for now , you can find resonable priced ammo for. The down sides are if the supply of surplus ammo dries up , it will be hard to find USA made ammo that won't cost a arm and leg. And parts could be hard to find , along with a gunsmith who knows how to fix them should you need them.

I would say a SA M1A or AR-10 in .308 is a better choice -- BUT -- they are AT LEAST $1000. IMHO , the .308 is here to stay and you will always be able to find some kind of ammo to feed them , easy to reload for and components are also easy to find.

The cheapest way to go would be a Savage heavy brl. in .308 ----- I've owned 4 Sav. LEs ---- 2 in .308 and 2 in .223 ------- ALL OF THEM were sub-MOA rifles and they are known as a Best Buy in long range rifles.

Taurus "Judge" 3 in. barrel. Yea it's a no-no for California but it fell off a truck and I had to give it a home.
You might want to redact that piece of information. If it is illegal to owe a Judge in California then I would not be bragging about it on the internet. THR does not condone illegal activity.

Fixed it. Wasn't bragging per in the least, just trying to give an accurate inventory. but I have corrected the post and the signature since I don't want to implicate myself or THR :)

Gunfighter: I was looking at both the savage and the remmy for long range plinking. Both in either .308 or .300 Win Mag and they both get me salivating. If I can acquire an unusual but +/- equal rifle would be preference. But my locker is looking more and more like at video game addicts dream collection and the last thing I want is to look like a "Fanboy".

I was looking into the PSLs a while ago, they just seem really neat to me and cheap ammo is always great. The only one I ever handled in a gun shop was a little rough and the scope was junk, maybe it was just a lemon, but it turned me off to buying one online. If I was to get one, I would have to handle it first.

I think it would be a good addition though, your collection seems pretty well rounded out, A PSL is always interesting.

You can't own a Taurus Judge in California? ***

If you get any sort of precision rifle, start with something in .308.

Fun rifle - M1 Garand. $600 from the CMP.

The Judge is outlawed because the state considers them a "short barrel shotgun" since it fires .410 shotgun shells. It also fires .45 Long Colt :D
