Had some time to kill so I went to some woods in back of my home (here on the farm). Had a decent mornings hunt. Early 70's Ruger 10/22 w/Nikon scope.

i live in arkansas. as you might expect, all the leaves are gone and the forest floor is "loud" when trying to sneek up on em'. this time of year i usually just sit in one of my deer stands (box type). i take a book to read and a thermos of coffee. once they come out of their den trees/nests or wonder over to within 40-50 yards of my stand i try for them (once they stop). great way to spend a few hours on a cold morning. going again tomorrow.

Where I grew up in Kansas City, we had greys in the city and Fox in the country, but it's been a while since I've lived there and my brother says the Fox have pretty much driven out the greys now. Used to hunt them there with exactly the same rifle of about the same vintage. Still have it in the safe.

I went deer hunting last saturday (late doe season). The 09 habitat stamp we have to buy is good for the late doe season that extends into Jan, so I had not gotten a '10 stamp yet. I had at least a half dozen squirells within ten yards at various times and fully aware of my presence. They must have just known I didn't have my stamp.

Looks tasty! I'm glad to see somebody else is having success when I'm not. I went squirrel hunting yesterday to no avail...I was being sloppy though, my "stalking" was more of a casual walk.

I have a folding stool, one of those X-shaped affairs. Mine has a bag or compartment under it and a strap for carrying over the shoulder. I go out early with my stool and set it up and sit down. In the bag is my book, thermos and extra down vest, knit hat, etc. (My motto is, "A comfortable hunter is a good hunter.)

Like you, I just sit and wait. I have an old Stevens Favorite made in the 1890s that was rusted out with corrosive primers and relined. It shoots accurately, but waaaay off the non-adjustable sights. I finally put a Riflesmith tang sight on it, and it's become my favorite squirrel rifle.

I had at least a half dozen squirells within ten yards at various times and fully aware of my presence.
In Arkansas if you have a hunting license, that's all you need. And if you're over 65, you can buy a lifetime hunting and fishing license. When deer hunting, I carry a Hammond Game Getter. This is a cartridge case with an off-center "primer pocket." The "primer pocket" is really a .22 chamber. Insert a nail-setting blank in the chamber and a 00 buckshot in the case mouth, and you have the perfect squirrel medicine.

I had a discussion in the barber shop with the local Fish and Game laddie. He pointed out the law says, "nothing larger than .22 rimfire."

I pointed out it says, "Except during open modern gun season for deer, bear and coyotes." It's always coyote season in Arkansas (except for about 3 1/2 weeks out of 52.):D

I just started a 3rd shift job and I went out into the woods before sun up today after work. I was just sitting there waiting for the sun to pop out and the woods to wake up, and this damn squirrel comes running next to me, about 20 feet away. I snap my head and my gun up and that bastard changed direction at 90 degrees and was gone. Another came out, but I couldn't put a bullet in him. Not for a lack of trying. Seems somewhere along the way, my scope lost accuracy. So I went to the range today to fix that.

I can't believe that both of the squirrels came out 30-60 minutes before sun up. That was completely against anything I have been told.

This is my first year hunting, so I learn something new about the squirrels every time I go.

I have a tripod chair that swivels and I have learned that in late season hunting that seems to be the best method. Find proof, sit and wait. They usually space out 15-30 minutes apart in my neck of the woods.
