Bringing gun to the UK?

I have a friend who's moving to London for a year for work. He's just starting to look into bringing any of his guns with him.
Anybody have a similiar experience? I'd assume handguns are not allowed, how about a shotgun?
I don't know what type of work visa he's getting yet.
Any info from UK members or any help from some one who has any experience appreciated :)

Ok, I'm a UK member but have no direct experience. Handguns are a no-no. As a UK citizen it is much easier to get a shotgun license than a rifle license. Pump actions are not allowed I think. I think your friend needs to speak to someone in 'authority', embassy may be of help.

Agricola -
Our laws don't allow for people working here on a visa to bring anything with them? What about purchasing a shotgun whilst over here?

I know an Englishman who built an iron-mounted Southern (flintlock) rifle here in America. He had to get a license to import it to Jolly Ole England. So, in a pinch, no.

The English are subjects, not citizens.

The bit that made me laugh was "may not take possession of the firearm while in an airport terminal". Apparantly even after walking through the miles of red tape, you still might get off a plane, and immediately start shooting...
You have to have someone deliver the gun to and from the airport...

As a Brit ex Pat .. all I can say is ...... :(
Don't even bother to try the ''red tape'' ...... not worth the hassle. A British ''Subject'' (sic) is without any redress when it comes to firearms these days and as for anyone from outside ... well, forget it!
Sling shots will soon be on the ''banned list''.:uhoh:
