Anybody played MOH: Rising Sun yet?

I bought it a couple days ago, and it's pretty cool. I played it in the game store before I bought it, and was so impressed at the way the guns worked I bought it on the spot.
When I got home and had a chance to play it without the glare, the guns don't really work all that great after all.
It is very fun though. I'm very impressed by how authentic the "Pacific feel" is. And when those Japanese soldiers charge at you with bayonets and swords, you kind of get freaked out! It's also quite short. I beat the whole thing in less than a day.
The missions are really good -- the USS California, Pearl Harbor, Phillipines, Guadalcanal, Singapore, Bridge on the River Kwai, and others. You don't end up doing a lot of fantasy/Sci-fi missions in this one like you did in Frontline.
Overall, I'd give it a 8.3 / 10.

How does it compare to MOH-Frontline? I am getting MOH-RS as soon as I can.

If y'all are going to talk about a video game, please keep it limited to the gun content of the game.
I really dislike having to close threads.

what japanese weapons can you pick up and use?

IMO, it is better than Frontline.
It also doesn't have as much a problem of "stopping power" with guns like the Thompson and Garand. You can usually put down a charging Japanese soldier from a good distance in 1 shot. The only problem is the one-in-hundred enemy that you'll find that take 5 shots to the face before they drop. But I guess maybe that's possible if the enemy is on some whacked-out drugs or something.
I can't remember the names of the 2 Japanese guns that you can pick up. Both are light machine guns, both 30-round capacity. One is magazine-fed, the other hopper-fed. Sadly, those are the only ones that you can pick up and use. Some of the troops use the Nambu pistol, but you can't pick that one up.
The Allied guns that you can use are the BAR, M1A1 Thompson, M1 Garand, M1911, a silenced Sten MkII, Winchester Mod. 12 Trench Shotgun, Springfield '03 scoped rifle, and a single-shot silenced pistol called a Welrod. I hoped there would be more guns, but I guess you can't have it all.
Ones I'd like to see:
Enfield rifle (some of the australian troops that help you have these, but you never get one)
M1 Carbine
BHP
Nambu pistol
BAR (it is in the game, but you only get to use it for a matter of seconds)
some American-model grenades
How about a flamethrower?
What I did like about it is that you get to experience some memorable battles in the pacific, whereas Frontline had you going around to look for secret weapons. In other words, Rising Sun isn't as "out there."
Cheers,
Wes
P.S. I'll post the names of the Japanese guns when I get a chance.

I don't mean to nerf the thread, but I thought I'd mention that my roomie and I were both quite offended by the commercial for this game. It seemed quite disrespectful.
Otherwise, I wouldn't mind trying a PTO WWII game.

To be honest, I'm not that enthused over this game. I bought it the day it came out (Xbox), and I'm a bit less than impressed. Enemy AI doesn't seem any smarter than MOH:FL, and in many ways it just seems like the same game with different skins. Frontline was great because the music really tied in with the feel of the game. It seemed like they went out of their way to include extra details, wider paths, more cover & concealment, etc. Here, it just seems like "follow the trail, oh, there's a guy up ahead hiding because I can hear him (even though he's in a spider hole). Gee thanks, non-player character, your screaming and shooting really helped me sneak up on the enemy.
Plus, the firearms seem way off in power. I've been putting shots regularly into center of mass or the head with the Springfield 03 and the soldiers just shrug it off - it shouldn't take 4 shots to get a guy. Meanwhile, a single shot from suppressed Sten and he keels over? Riiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiight.
Explosions are good. Scripted actions are neat. But so far the game isn't as fun as the previous one. Maybe I just like blasting Germans better.

I'm still working on Socom II but will get MOH: RS after finishing. (I wish the M14 had a silencer so I can use it on all missions). MOH FL was excellent. The opening sequence was Private Ryan revisited.

Spark, I agree with you in a lot of ways.
Yeah, sometimes the weapons are way off in power. The kicker is that with some guys one shot COM puts them down, where 5 shots to the head don't on the next guy. :scrutiny: And yeah, I didn't understand that the Sten is such a manstopper in this. :barf:
I really thought it was very fun, though. Don't get me wrong, I love Frontline (like you, probably because I like blasting Germans better), but I don't like that every WWII Europe game has to be tied to the "Secret Weapons" or "Supernatural experiments," etc. of the Nazi regime. So I guess I like the first half of Frontline a lot. After you get into doing all of the "superspy" missions, I usually just shut it off.
Devonai, could you elaborate a bit? I never saw a commercial for the game -- can you explain why it was offensive?
Cheers,
Wes

Why is it disrespectful?

Hopper fed gun should be the Type 11 in 6.5mm.
The magazine fed gun could be either the Type 96 in 6.5, or the Type 97 in 7.7.

Mike, you're right about the Type 11. The other one is called the Type 99 LMG (7.7mm) in the game. Since I know nothing of Japanese guns, I don't know if that's accurate or not.
Hmmm... I guess we're not going to find out why the commercial for the game is offensive. I really want to know about that.
Wes
P.S. A correction: the shotgun is a Winchester 1893 riot shotgun.
Also, the book says there's an M9A1 bazooka, but I must have never picked that one up. :scrutiny:

Sorry, I was getting to this.
The opening scene is a idyllic tropical underwater vista. Guys jump in the water to the tune of peaceful guitar strumming. Then bullets begin zipping by and you realize something is very wrong with this picture. Then you get the whole picture: this is Pearl Harbor. The byline? "Welcome to paradise."
I found it to be disrespectful. IMO one has to be very careful when poking fun at warfare.
