I am a Maryland resident, but I spend my week working in Connecticut. I have one of my handguns with me (locked in a safe in the house I rent a room in) that I'd like to take to the range.

However, CT requires a CCW to purchase a handgun where MD does not. As such, I am fully legal in MD and keeping the gun in my residence in CT is also legal. But I am wondering, is it legal for me to transport my gun to the range and use it there (in the state of CT)?

Anyone have any experience in these matters?

The best advice I can give you is to obtain a permit to carry and that will take care of you problem. The permit process is not that complex but it will take some time as the volume of applications goes up every year.

If you are a non-CT resident like the OP, how can you obtain a CT CCW permit?

CT issues non-resident permits.

CT will only issue non-res permits for people who hold a permit in their state of residence. Unfortunately, obtaining a permit in my home state (Maryland) is basically impossible.

Becoming a CT resident isn't really an option right now (nor do I expect it to be in the future).

What I am going to try is getting a FL non-res and applying for a CT non-res with that. The worst they can say is "no".

You might check with the CT AG if carrying an unloaded hangun in a locked case in the trunk is OK.

This just shows how archaic the processes are state to state. In Maryland, no permit is required to purchase but a CCW permit is "impossible" to get. In CT, you need the CCW permit to purchase but it relatively painless to get. This of course with the exception of a few towns in CT where they "stretch" the states requirements.
