Have had my Stoeger coach 20g for about 6 months. I'm looking to accessorize and keep her safe.

1. Is there a way to lock the action outside of running a cable through the barrel, dissasembling in half or a safe?
2. What type of sling would you recommend? Not adverse to a swivel on the stock, but I do not want to tap into the rib.

....open the action and run your cable through the trigger guard and around the receiver under the barrels....action can't close...
...they make loop slings that slide down the barrels...but I don't like them in the way...

You could always use a "zip tie" around the action and through the trigger guard - if the gun is unloaded, it can't be opened without cutting the tie.

As for swivels - there are types that have loops for both the butt stock and barrels. They work decently enough. Personally, I have no need for a sling on a SxS, YMMV

I'm looking at this http://www.dixiegunworks.com/product_info.php?cPath=22_100_351&products_id=9308 for the sling. My only issue is with the carry. Can you only sling with the barrell down? Looking at this type of sling, if slung with the barrel up does the loop slip? I would be using this during some upland hunting, so I do not have to hand carry for hours.

I appreciate the homegrown ways to secure the action. However I am wondering if anything has been manufactured.

I have a Savage model 24 O/U with a sling and carry it muzzle up all the time. Maybe I am missing the question, but why can't you carry it muzzle up?

It just seems like the loop end would slip up the barrel after carrying muzzle up for a period of time. With no connection point and being jostled around I can just see the loop end sliding up the barrel and needing constant adjustment. The point of the sling is for convenience and comfort. The last thing I want on a hike is to fuss after something.

I see your point. I suggest you take the time to install the studs so that won't happen. You will like the result in the long term a great deal more and be able to carry the shotgun as you desire. We are not talking a lot of money here. Here is a picture of my strap set up on my Savage 24.

I didn't want a stud/swivel on the forend just for the fact that I would have to adjust my hand to a sling. However I am taking your advice into consideration.
