Contact Lenses and Recoil

I had an interesting experience this past week, while sighting in for deer season. I was shooting a Winchester 94 in 30-30, and the wind was just howling... the RO would annouce the direction and speed every so often, and it was typically in the 35 to 37mph range. Fortunately, this was just a "re-check" session to make sure I liked my settings and ammo from the last time. I felt kind of sorry for the guys starting from scratch.

Anyway, I was wearing a pair of soft contact lenses... which were a bit past their prime (supposed to be tossed weekly, but it's more like once every month or two). I shot a total of 15 rounds, and on 3 of them, the recoil was enough to jar my contact lens from my right eye.

This past year, I shot quite a few highpower matches, using both an AR and an M1, and never had that happen. The only thing I can think of is that the wind was strong enough that the lens would dry out slightly and lift from my eye just a bit. Then, when I fired, it would pop out.

Every time, it would drop slightly and stick to my cheek behind my shooting glasses and I was able to retrieve it.

Maybe I'll toss in a new pair of lenses prior to Opening Day. :D

Yes, the wind dried them out... Happens all the time to me- shooting glasses shield them from the wind sometimes, but in 30 plus mph winds...

I've gone 6 months with 2 weeks disposables- removing and cleaning them nightly of course- not recommended by the way...

I don't think the recoil has much to do with it but muzzle blast has effected my lenses in the past- not mine, an 8mm Mag on the adjacent bench!

A fresh pair of lenses is a treat...

Haven't had a lens fall out on me but sighting in the wind does dry them out. I keep some visene for contacts in the vehicle and remember to blink more when the wind blows.
