but honestly im a little intimidated by this. for starters, it says to remove the bead....should i really do this myself, whats a good way, or should i just have a gunsmith do this? the instructions are written more towards someone who has performed general barrel mods before and I never have...

I believe the bead is just screwed in there, and IIRC it's got a hex-sided base.

BTW I don't think I bothered to remove the bead when I put the heat shield on my 590. There was enough clearance. But yours may be different.

Removing the bead is easy -- u need a little (ok, very little) wrench. It makes putting the guard on that much easier, even possible, without scratching the barrel. W/the bead off you can relatively more easily spread the front a little as you slip it over the muzzle. The alternative is to open it that much wider or snap it down over the barrel which, I assure you, will scratch the barrel.

Al

PS: I leave a LITTLE gap at the rear -- the guard should quite touch the reciever IMO, otherwise, how do you know you have quite seated the barrel properly, and, what if you want to try it on a different Mossberg?

good advice Al thanks.

what about cutting the spacer? can someone describe this? I am putting the heatshield on a 500, 18.5".

got the shield. I must say, at least on my gun, the recommended length for the spacer of 1 5/16" was WAY too long. in this case, the manual was blatantly wrong. I feel I have the prcoess down though, partially due to your guys' help, so thanks again.

Can anyone chime in on the spacer cuts? This relates directly to using it on a 500a standard 6 shot.

Basically you measure the spacer, cut where noted or a bit longer than noted, install it, see if it's too tight, remove a bit, and reinstall. Least that's what I did. Err on the side of too long rather than too short, obviously. IIRC mine was perfect first cut. There should be a template in the instructions.

Yes that's the havlinsales stock. Really good folks.

Oops you posted while I was. Dunno about fitting it to a shorter barrel particularly. I'm sure you'll figure it out.

ya i got it. the needed length was much shorter than stated in the instructions, but it's seated nice and tight and the beads back in.

as for your gun, I'm afraid I may have to ape one up like it in the future. It's just too damn cool not to. I actually want a wood SET exactly like yours, but one I can install the Fleur De Lis pistol grip cap on without too much modification..I think that'd look COOL!

I wish they would make one for the 590A1.

Funny, I was just thinking of taking mine off. Anything you don't need is slowin' ya down :).

Acceptableusername,
So what brand is the heatshield?

It's a Mossberg brand heatshield - in my experiences the more quality of the heatshields produced. If I had an 870, I'd still priobably try to fit the Mossberg brand heatshield to it (dunno if they fit or not? anyone know?).

As for not needing them, some don't. Some do. Some kinda need them and kinda like them, of which I'm the example here. This went on a PGO gun - any extra functional weight, within reason, increases the recoil reduction. Plus I do rollover reloads strictly, so it helps me at the range, should I forget to wear gloves, so you could see how it'd help me in the unlikely event I ever had to warm the barrel up in bad situation. Idk about you guys, but my barrels heat up considerably after just 3 or 4 rapid shots. LAST of importance, I think it looks COOL! :D

Just my .02, yours may vary.

Mainsail, contact

AIMPRO Tactical.

They can put a heat shield on your 590a1. I intend to go through them eventually. They don't seem the fastest to respond though, so I'd call.

Main;
Did u mean a heatshield for a 590A1? Same as for 500/590 and Mossberg makes them in AT LEAST blue and parkerized -- ask me how I know.

;)
