I've never really been interested in a rifle with a folding stock, until now. I know I cannot LEGALLY install it on a new rifle, but I have a Winchester M1 Carbine that would really look nice with one. Since this is an original GI (very old) rifle, would it be legal to install one on it? What is the 1989 Bush all about anyhow? Didn't it also do away with bayo. lugs and folding stocks on anything made after '89?

IF your M-1 carbine ALREADY had two of the "evil features" mentioned in the ban at the time of its enactment in 1994 (bayonet lug, threaded muzzle, flash suppressor, etc.), then it is a grandfathered "assault weapon" [sic] and you can put a folder on it. If it didn't, putting a folding stock on it would be a federal felony.

If it presently has zero "evil features," you can add ONE. A nonfolding stock with a pistol grip, OR a folding stock without a pistol grip, OR a flash suppressor, OR a bayonet lug, and so on. Unfortunately, because the pistol grip and folding mechanism are counted as separate "evil features," almost any workable folder is prohibited on any rifle that wasn't grandfathered.

(I've been kicking myself for nine years for not going ahead and getting the folder I wanted for my mini-14 before the Clinton ban passed in '94. I thought it wouldn't pass, and I have paid the price every since.)
