the firing line?

I was never a member at the firing line, but noticed that a lot of the same members were there. So why did it close down? Did it just change to the highroad? Why? What was wrong with the firing line?

Hi zahc. Glad you asked about this. :)
The Firing Line is the place where many, if not most, of the members of The High Road got their feet wet in discussion forums; myself included. Most of the staff of THR were also staff at TFL and both sites share a very similar philosopy: To promote responsible firearms ownership and support the Right to Keep and Bear Arms.
Here's a thread that explains the end of TFL: http://www.thefiringline.com/forums/announcement.php?s=&forumid=13
To answer your questions directly:
It closed down because Rich, the owner of TFL, could no longer commit the time necessary to ensure that it would continue the way he wanted it to continue. And it didn't just change to THR. We are one of many discussion forums that have risen to take up the slack left by the closing of TFL. The Firing Line set the high water mark for civil discourse and intelligent discussions.
It is still worth it to look around TFL and learn from the past discussions. There is a wealth of information there as a permanent reference and monument to what is possible for an Internet discussion forum to accomplish.

There were also a LOT of us at TFL who got our feet wet over at Compuserve's old Firearms Forum...

Ah yes, I remember those days fondly. The decidedly "anti-gun" bent of many CS staff and members only served to sharpen one's debating skills.
Sometimes I miss those days...
