This has the gloss finish and the standard Duplex retical. The scope can be had with a matte finish, but only with the wide duplex retical. I prefer the standard duplex retical, but not this finish since this is for a deer rifle. Will the gloss finish cause a problem in the field? Obviously the concern is with sun glare spooking a deer. Should I keep this scope, and maybe paint with dull camo paint or go with the wide duplex?. Something about the wide duplex doesn't seem to agree with my eyes, but then I may just get used to it over time. Any opinions on this? Thanks in advance.

I use a 4x gloss finish scope on my deer hunting rifle and there doesn't seem to be any problems with spooking deer. Every year I that I have been hunting, I have taken a deer.

Any movement is going to spook deer, especially in the sun. You could wrap some camo tape around it and stay in the shade. I prefer to sit in a blind, you can get away with a lot more movement.

I would go with the scope reticule you like the best and not worry about the finish.

Dull matt finish on commercial firearms is a fairly recent fad, and started because it is cheaper for a gun maker to matt finish metal with a sandblast gun then it is to polish high-gloss with buffing wheels.

Perhaps the best deer rifle ever made, or at least one of the most widely used for many years, was the Model 94 Winchester 30-30, and it had big flat receiver sides finished in fairly shiny blueing. And don't even look at a Weatherby Mk5 without your sunglasses on.
