I've handled a K-31 and found it to be the most comfortable C&R I've experienced. I love the ergonomics of it and the balance is great as well. The receiver is well constructed and the straight pull action is great. Here is the deal: ammo is expensive as heck. Any suggestions for affordable surplus?

For C&R rifles they're about the most accurate on average. That is, the average K-31 is going to be more accurate than most other C&R rifles. There are probably some Swede Mausers and a few Finns that could out-shoot them on the high end, but there are also a lot of Swedes and Finns that don't shoot as well. Graf & Sons has brass and loaded ammo for the 7.5 Swiss, and it's a great round. The only limitation is that the K-31's are really designed to shoot rounds matching the GP-11 ball. Performance may go down if you try to load big 220 grain bullets or little bitty 120 grainers or if you change the pressure too much. The straight pull is fast but it may not be as forgiving as say a Mauser '98 action if you need to extract a sticking cartridge.

I 2nd the motion. You can reload 7.5 Swiss for nearly the same cost as reloading .308 or .30-06. You can use .308 bullets, and make brass by resizing .284 Win and then trimming to length (so I hear--I have not tried this). There is also some new 7.5 Swiss brass coming on the market.

You need to start reloading, anyway, so might as well use this as the excuse. Look at it this way, if you were to buy a case of ammo, it would cost way more than your reloading setup and components. Also, if you were to buy a new rifle that was as nice as the K-31, you would spend way more, too. Its simple economics. ;)

I just got my K-31 a couple days ago and swung by the local gun show this afternoon to pick up some ammo. Best deal I could find was 17.95 for 20 rounds. At nearly $0.90 a round, I'm definitely going to take up reloading.

On the plus side, if you get GP-11 Ball you're getting the best military ball ammo ever made. It's target-grade stuff. The Swiss spared no expense making it, and even put individual wax seals around each bullet. to reduce chamber heat and keep any possible moisture away from the powder.

AIM (SOG too) has it for around for around $24/60 or $185/480. Dan's Ammo also has similar prices, perhaps J&G Sales also.

Dan's (http://www.dansammo.com/ammo.asp) has it for $185/480 shipped (east of the Mississippi anyway +$10 west) or roughly $.40/round. The gun show I was at today was selling it for $.60/round so shop around a bit (of course the same guy was selling M/N 91/30's for $220 (the ones AIM currently has for $70) so apparently he was working off of the uninformed buyer theory of profit making  ).

I just got 500 pieces of brass last week from Graf's. This brass isn't readily available and will probably be gone very quickly if it isn't gone already. They have had the brass made twice in the last two years with their own headstamp.

This may be obvious, but think about this situation. This is just one of the many reasons to handload. For some, it is all about saving money, but that is only ONE reason to handload. Easily building your own ammo for the obscure calibers that arn't cheap or readily available is another one. My shooting of calibers such as the 7.5 Swiss is not subject to the whims of the local dealers, gunshows, importation, or ridiculous prices.

These are fantastic rifles and IMHO, the best deal going. They are truely made like a Swiss watch. Very solid, smooth and precise.

Accuracy with mine, using iron sights has been 1" to 2" at 100. I know that it will do better with a little more load developement.

Brass really isn't much of an issue. Grafs has theirs available and resized 284 Win. works very well. Lee makes reasonably priced dies and the round uses a standard 30 cal bullet.

I like mine so much I ordered another one. It should be here this week. Get one while they are still plentiful and cheap! They are worth far more than the asking price!

Jaeger, who did you order from?

I say go with the K31 while they are still inexpensive. Mine is very fun to shoot.

The lack of easily available softpoint ammo for hunting is kind of a pain, but it will someday lead me to reloading.

I ordered mine from FGS (www.fgsinc.8m.com/)

Their price is a little higher than AIM or SOG but they have an excellant reputation and will handpick at no additional charge. You can specify beech or walnut.

Anxiously waiting..............:D

At Dans Ammo, if you mention the "Swiss Rifle Forum" in the comments line, you can get the 60 rd. packs of GP-11 loaded onto 10 chargers (6 rds per charger, for the k-31's 6rd. mag) chargers for $30. The chargers themselvess usually sell for more than a $1 a piece, so if you're tricky, you can get 60 rds. for less than $20.
